is only likely to encourage false expectations, increase frustration, and encourage second-guessing. In actual fact I cannot help but think that this would be the case if the 'Board' adopted a vow of silence ! Well, I did agree they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. But I think one way the world has changed is that the default option used to be silence, and you spoke when you had something to say. Now, the default option is start talking and grab the limelight, never mind if you have something to say or not. In my view, this is NOT a good thing. A good barometer of this (as any journalist will confirm) is the PR industry. When I was first writing in the early 80s, Press Releases in general arrived when something had taken place or happened. Sure, the copy was exaggerated, but it was still demonstrably related to a "thing" of some sort. Nowadays, the media is deluged with PRs that aren't news at all...just noise, rubbish, the senders talking up themselves. To me, if I own a football team in the transfer window I speak only about transfers I have concluded, when the deal is done. What possible benefit could there be in discussing something which hasn't happened, might well not ever happen, and which by putting in the public domain might even negatively impact my negotiating position? Do you really think our owners feel so beholden to or respectful of our supporters that they're keeping us in the loop out of the goodness of their hearts? If you do, good luck with that because they're just sating their egos as football club owners by playing to their audience. Personally, I can't see the wisdom in their communications strategy.
One of the most revealing areas is the "Questions to CPFC2010" forum on the BBS which has become a forum to bitch about every little fault with each individual's own utopian view of how their matchday should go. So in one sense, part of me thinks it would be better just to do what they feel is best and limit interaction to simply reading opinion and acting if they feel necessary. On the flipside, I'm much more inclined to think a significant percentage of our supporters need to shut the f*** up, grow up and stop acting like spoilt brats. Just an opinion though. Then after a managerial change we not only competed in games for 90 minutes, we actually won them and before long we had beaten the lowest ever points tally ever recorded and more importantly we got ourselves into the mix, catching the other struggling teams up. Because of this the genral expectation seems to be to now spend loads of millions and risk undoing all the good work we have achieved thus far. If nothing else we need to learn from the mistakes of the last transfer window. We now have that fighting spirit back that Holloway felt we lost in the dressing room. When I saw that Wilbraham was on the bench at the weekend my intial reaction was probably one of major surprise and horror if I am honest. But then he came on and did a magnificent job for the team - played to his strengths just like he did in the play offs. This someone that has been frozen out all season so far. He showed us the team spirit that still exists. We have to be so careful not to lose our identity and what Palace is all about. Yes we have a fantastic chance of staying up now, one I really never believed we would have after 8 games or so. But the wrong signings could ruin all of the good work that is happening, just as well as the costs could have major implications too if the fees are not right. We just have to trust the powers that be to get it right. Pulis strikes me as a man that will have his say and lets be honest none of us know for sure what goes on behind closed doors. I still have confidence that the guys in charge know what they are doing and whatever happens in this transfer window, we will be far stronger come May then we were last season. I am as guilty as the next of checking SSN constantly and here for further developments, and I am hoping we do sign a player or two to compliment what we have. That said I would rather leave all that to the experts. For know lets assume no news is good news and see where we are on the 1st February. Hand on heart - how many of us expected to be sitting out of the relegation places with 20 points at this stage of the season. I certainly didn't!

I have to say I agree with all those sentiments Hambo. Supporters expectations just increase all the time (not just at Palace) and the more of a success we become as a club, the higher the expectation grows. When we won at Wembley, everybody had us down as dead certs for the drop. Most honest Palace fans probably believed this - I know I did. I just wanted to make the most of our experience in the top flight however short they may be. I just didn't want to see us humiliated week in week out and even though we struggled to get points on the board early doors we ticked the box of not being humiliated in those opening games. Then after a managerial change we not only competed in games for 90 minutes, we actually won them and before long we had beaten the lowest ever points tally ever recorded and more importantly we got ourselves into the mix, catching the other struggling teams up. Similarly it is worth noting that the division bunching up the way it has means there is one of, if not the, best chances of staying up we've had. Having a limited windown to get players in (that the manager has stated he believes we need to remain in the division) will obviously add a degree of intensity to events - but it doesn't mean people should suspend the thought process. I've blathered on in various places about how much the Premier League encourages short-term thinking amongst club officials and supporters alike - and I honestly can't logically reason why I would criticise the board for staying strong in terms of expenditure in the transfer market.

Edited by Hambo (23 Jan 2014 1.21pm) Good post...agree with pretty much all of it. I do think para 1 above is absolutely right on the money. On the other para, I'm sure there'd be a lot of debate about who, exactly, the spoiled brats were and you'd find some of them in agreement with your sentiment, missing the fact that the joke was on them in the first place.

I'm pretty sure Pulis said at the end of December that we needed to do our business early but as there's about a week to go and no one has come in I'm a little concerned that we don't act like we did in the summer. Personally I'd prefer no one to come in than do mad dash deals on the final day for anyone and everyone that is willing to come to us. Surely we had targets before the window opened and some to fall back on? It seems we are now trudging through the Championship for some half decent buys...if there are any?

Oddly enough the deals that we did on deadline day were probably better than most of the ones down earlier in the closed season with Adrian Mariappa, Barry Bannan, Adlene Guedioura and Jack Hunt being signed plus Cameron Jerome on loan and four of those five have played a big part in our revival this season whereas the 482 signed earlier in the window have been less involved apart from Chamakh and Jason Puncheon

I agree Ian J,
Of course it does. You don't think the current owners were lucky to have formed a consortium of like minded businessmen/fans to spread the individual cost? Which Jordan tried for a good few years before he went under. You don't think they were luck that Wilf was only 18 months from fully blooming into a £10m prospect? Something that could have saved Jordan from going under. Instead he had a similar prospect in Bostock who lied about his commitment to Palace and signed for Spuds. You don't think the owners got lucky when after only a couple of years of ownership and with a very cheap squad and totally unproven manager we found ourselves top of the table, challenging to go up and despite Freedman's love of money and lack of loyalty still managed to get up with a different manager mid season? You know, promotion. That thing that cost Jordan many millions in managers, players and wasted seasons before we finally got promotion under his stewardship.

I would rather hear nothing at all and sign the odd one or two players that will bring quality in without other clubs getting wind of it and beating us to it. TP has said that it's proving to be difficult. No one knows what will happen, we could sign no one, play badly and be down by the end of March. We could sign no one, FFS come back and be the next Lambert and keep us up. We could sign quality and still go down. Who knows? I work with Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton fans. At the beginning of the season before we played any games I was the butt of all the jokes and I proudly stuck by my beloved team. Now the same people are telling me how well we're playing and they think and hope we will stay up. So it would be nice to bring quality in but we're not doing to shabby as it is. We're in the Prem and we love Palace. If we're in the Championship next year we'll still love Palace so smile .
Why would anyone chose to be a Seagull? The Eagle is a far superior creature. The Seagull lives under it's damp pier meekly looking out, blinded by the sheer quality of the Eagle's palace. |

Getting here was lucky to some degree staying will take more. Pulis has to be sound judgement as was Ollie both have track records of doing what we wanted. Buying early was always going to be a tough/impossible task at our end of the market with so much competition from higher wage payers i think 2010 are doing the right thing any panic buys may cost us the one thing we can not lose team spirit.

I'm not complaining about that but lets not all start pretending it was all down to business acumen! Absolutely correct. I'm sure that our current owners are astute businessmen in so far as you don't achieve success or amass a fortune (either/or) as they have without a degree of astuteness, but they haven't particularly shown it, or needed to show it, at Palace. On the playing side, hiring a manager with a reputation for enjoying a heavy night out wasn't particularly astute. Replacing him with a home grown novice was either astute or lucky or a bit of both. Losing that novice when he turned out to be highly capable certainly wasn't astute, and getting promoted given our form after he'd left was far more luck than judgment. Losing the replacement manager in less than a year was many things and astute wasn't one of them. Taking four weeks to replace him was a mixed bag; the final choice of replacement was astute; had we persuaded him to come four weeks earlier, we might be in the top 10 by now. On the playing side, the Zaha sale was luck more than judgment (the current owners merely cashed in on him; they didn't develop him) though you could argue they were astute to sell when his value was high. In terms of incoming players they've brought in a mixed bag. Not much astute business there, though. On the non-playing side they've done what's required to bring the ground up to Premiership requirements; they had no choice but to do that so it's not astute. I believe some improvements have been made to facilities generally and if so, that would be a sensible step. But it's not astute as it so obviously needed doing that only a fool would not have done so. All in all, our owners have done a good, professional, competent job off the pitch. Astuteness not really required; an idiot can tell most of our facilities are paleolithic and that negatively impacts prospective revenue. They've actually done an average to poor job with managers but they've had real rub of the green and the team has punched above its weight, good fortune they've benefitted from too. We have decent owners who support the club, work hard, and have their hearts in the right place. They're far more good than bad and many clubs have a lot worse, But heroes, Gods, perfect, or deserving of unquestioned praise? Not for me.
