This post has been merged from a topic called 'Should we take the gamble?' by Moose Pulis sees himself as one who buys at £X and sells at £X times 3. Getting Rhodes at the top of his price would not fulfill that criteria. Also, he has said point blank he is out of our price range. If he then buys him, who will believe him in the future? He doesn't strike me as the type who would be willing to sacrifice his credibility. If there were no bidders next month and Blackburn dropped his price for us, then maybe Pulis would have the chance to reconsider and save face. However, that is unlikely to happen. I suspect there is a mighty tussle for his signature going on as I write this. PS Rhodes remains on my wish list along with Zaha, Cresswell and Dann.

If you ask me saying "we cant afford him" is a great way of deflecting the question from a reporter, maybe hes just keeping his cards to his chest ? Edited by azureus (31 Dec 2013 12.30pm)

I really believe we should....and spend ten million or whatever it takes to get Jordan Rhodes. The player certainly appears to have the ability to play at this level and would have a good re-sale value should the worst happen. He would, in my opinion, be a far better investment both in terms of recouping our outlay if necessary and, more importantly, as a genuine goal scorer much better than many of the other strikers we have been linked with. I am not advocating a spend, spend, spend philosophy rather suggesting a worthwhile purchase. Better to spend ten million with a good return expected (in terms of both goals and re-sale) than, say, three million on a player who will not score as regularly and be worth nothing in a year or so's time. Much prefer Alfred Finnbogason from the Dutch League for £6 million. Over a goal a game this season as well as 20 plus goals last as well (41 goals in 48 games). Save the £4 million plus for another striker.

I tend to agree. I think this chap could keep us up. I think it's worth an £8m bid. As you say, it's an investment. We also need a goal scoring midfielder. Him and Ledley and we'd be looking good IMO. Blackburn bought him for about this amount. We would have to bid far higher and I see an all mighty scrap for his signature with other teams at the bottom end of the EPL. Have to be careful that we don't end up chasing rainbows like the summer, leaving our business last gasp which may well happen with Rhodes and then clutching at straws at the death when the deal falls through. Rubbish for two reasons.
