She was a grocer's daughter.

A trade that would be decimated by the policys of capital and corporate appeasement hers and successive govrnments would pursue.

Back then running a grocers was a decent trade, with a good income, that qualified you as middle class. These days, you'll be lucky to make a living in the trade as an independent.

Ah but he'd be in a good position to secure a job in Morrison's fruit & veg aisle.

When she won power in 1979, Palace won the the Div 2 Championship exactly 1 week later.

When she left office in 1990, we were 3rd in the top flight.

She weren't all bad.

Some major changers to British indusrty/unions was necessary.
Perhaps she was a bit OTT in leaving whole generations and communities on the scrap-heap. I went to a former mining village near Chesterfield last year and met a bloke who never worked again after the pits were shut in the 1980's.

My parents did quite well out of it (dad was in the MOD), but then i went to University in 1989 and found she was starting to erode student grants, and introduce Student Loans.
Students did have it easy up to that point, but if you weren't up to the academic workload you were usually off the course after the first term. Ultimately it made it more diffcult for poorer families to send a gifted child to higher education.

The Poll tax also made my parents consider voting for another party, until they realised (in their 6 bedroom detached house) they'd actually be paying less.

*Trident
*The cruise missiles at Greenham Common
*The Westland affair
*Homes for votes
*Got Britain labelled as "The dirty man of Europe" for a while (causing acid rain in Scandinavia), until she killed all our heavy industry.
*was complicit with the US of A, in terms of military activity. Almost xenaphobic with Europeans

Was the first Prime Minister to have a policy term named after her, whilst still in office: Thatcherism.

in 1990 was half-expecting her and Dennis to be found dead in No10's basement, having committed suicide.

Probably the politician i have most hated. However, she always played with a straight bat, was a woman of her word, and never got caught 'playing away'.

Anyone not realising the greatness of this woman must be ignorant of her legacy.

Ok tell us about her "greatness" - Help make us less ignorant

This country was on it's knees in th 70's, Margaret Thatcher, did something previous govs of both hues had failed to do and that was to make Britain competitive.

The EU rebate - now somewhat eroded, but redressed in part the inherent basket case that was the cap.

Instrumental in bringing around the end of the cold war by getting Gorby and Ron to work and trust each other.

Won a war - Falkland Islanders I'm sure will be forever grateful.

Two million manufacturing jobs lost
Unemployment from one million to three million
inflation 10 per cent when she came into power
inflation 10 per cent when she was booted out
Prolonged a war - in Northern Ireland - through instansigence and collusion
Closed down the most Grammar Schools (when Educ.Sec)
Sold off state companies very cheaply
Wasted North Sea Oil revenues in doing so
Signed us up to the ERM and , thus, Black Wednesday
And, of course, the Poll Tax

Plenty more

Far from great.

She did good stuff too but the destructive stuff outweighs it imo. The sh1t we see in our society today? A lot of that had its nascence from the 80's and that Government.

You're making numbers up - inflation was not 10% when she left.

I don't think there will be another prime minister ever who divides opinion as much as she did.

You only have to look at the debate on here and all over the country really that shows you that the left have to admit she got some things right. And the right have to admit that she got some things wrong.

One thing I did respect her for was once she made up her mind she stuck with it, even though at times she probably knew with hindsight it was wrong. But the public expect strong leaders. This has always been the way over hundreds of years. As prime minister you are paid to make decisions, massive decisions that change peoples lives. You're never gonna keep everyone happy but I would rather someone stay true to there word rather chop and change there mind which shows weakness.

Sums it up pretty well for me. Whether you agree with her or not, you must at least give her credit for having strong principles and actually sticking to them. She did this, in my opinion, not to win votes, but because she felt the actions she took were the right thing to do.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Her biggest mistake was not letting our Harriers and tanks march over and into Buenos Aires when she had the chance in 1982.

We could have ripped the snakes head off given the chance and established an overseas territory in Latin America, based on good Protestant values.

I'm starting to think you don't take the HOL very seriously any more, Matthew...

Not at all Moosey. I am stimulating debate and thus keeping HoL alive.

Without debate, HoL is just a place for weirdos to promote the works of Bruce Springsteen, accuse others of insulting their wife on travel blogs and to discuss binge w***ing sprees from the 1980s.

And I for one welcome it, you cheeky scamp.

All I can say is how did she last 11 years as PM if she was that bad? I tell you before she came to power our country was on deaths door. She was immense and yes it was tough but she was one of the best things that happened to this country. All the people on here who disagree and like chucking abuse are just pathetic, childish and have no respect. I'll have a quiet drink and toast to her tonight. For those that want to reply to this with a derogatory comment, I won't bother replying its not the right time and I can't be bothered arguing with uneducated , inverted snobs that can't keep quiet on a day when someone dies and families and friends are in bereavement.
