Watch this Netflix series called painkillers based on the true story of the Oxycontin scandal. If you don't like drama there are several documentaries about the same subject. The uncomfortable truth is that the FDA and bigPharma are in bed together. Work together, certainly. In bed implies corruption and whilst the potential for it is obvious the responsibility to ensure it doesn’t happen falls on the various checks and balances established by regulations and laws. If programmes like this expose failings then they are providing us with a valuable service. From all I can see the oversight looks strong but the devious will always try to find ways around things. So I cannot believe the FDA as an institution are in bed with the Pharmaceutical. Industry. The people who work for it wouldn’t tolerate it and would report anything like that. I can believe there are bad apples.

The uncomfortable truth is that the FDA and bigPharma are in bed together. Not just the FDA - it goes all the way down the chain. However there’s a big difference between saying that means the whole medical community is also corrupt. Much like the met police racism labelling. Sure, they both have problems but not everyone is the problem. You should also read Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre. And whilst I have seen this pushed on Netflix (but not yet watched) I highly recommend watching another series on Disney+, Dopesick, which has Michael Keaton at his best and is also about the sacklers / OxyContin / opioid crisis.

Happens everywhere in the corporate world - just appears to go in cycles, less after some sort of expose and then further away from that they get the more lax things become. Repeating myself but do read some Ben Goldacre. Not recent but certainly eye opening.

It certainly appears that there are some questionable things going on.

It’s a while since I read anything from him but I recall he always delivered a thoughtful, objective analysis without political overtones. So could be taken seriously.

There were a number of similarities of opinions, minus the Covid ones which didn’t exist then but fit the general pattern.

Just look at the mass lawsuits against Purdue. The man at the FDA who approved it's use joined Purdue a year later. So I will give you a brief summary. - Oxycontin is simply Heroin in tablet form. - The FDA approved the use of the drug for general use despite warnings from doctors and researchers that it has the same addictive qualities are heroin. - Their application to the FDA contained many lies e.g. only 1% of patients would become addicted (nonsense claim it's heroin for god sakes). - The guy who approved it at the FDA joined the company on a fat salary after they groomed him for months whilst he kept rejecting their application and then he changed his mind. As of today there have been congressional hearings and the company is now controlled by the courts whilst various lawsuits are ongoing. At best the FDA failed completely to investigate the application at worst some of their staff colluded with Purdue and the FDA had no oversight to prevent this.
