China is actually the world's second biggest economy by GDP....projected to be the first sometime this century....I'll say it again.....where's the hand outs from China? China does whatever the feck it wants and has cities with so much pollution that you can't see the sun and it has freely running polluted red rivers.....yet its President wasn't greeted by twenty thousand 'useful idiots' in London was it. Life teaches you that anything given for free is eventually taken for granted and is soon rewarded with contempt by a percent. Europe is run by short term and short sighted politicians and institutions. Edited by Stirlingsays (17 Jul 2018 9.06pm)
To attack your closest friends and allign with a power that threatens to destabilise this prosperous balance is, at best, irresponsible. Since you mention it, China are a massive economy and are beginning to flex their political muscles; but have some way to go to match US world influence. However, I don't recall Li firing from the hip or acting in a non-statesmanlike manner in the way Trump does. Li is an autocratic leader, yet he speaks with care and seems to listen to his advisers.

We are not going to agree on this I can see that. However, it is difficult to separate US economic success with their role of western leadership. The Atlantic alliance in terms of relatively free trade and long term peace has been one factor to make that country wealthy. The US are far from angels, but in this at least, good has come out of this leadership and close relationship.
Europe draws them into two world wars because of their historical ties. Then they spend many millions of dollars building Europe up after WW2 where they lose many thousands of dead. Then America spends god knows how much money defending Europe during the cold war.....specifically so it doesn't have to be drawn into a foreign world war again. I differ massively from you contention that wealth equals responsibility....Know that you expecting wealthy people to act responsible. There's no way to compel them....just look at China.....oh and that's a juicy one I'll get to. Originally posted by silvertop
To attack your closest friends and allign with a power that threatens to destabilise this prosperous balance is, at best, irresponsible. America's allies are full of 'useful idiots' as we have just seen in London. Like I mentioned, things given for free end up being treated with contempt. Europe is rich enough to be defending itself....it's a damn cheek that Germany spends 1 percent on defence.....Russia spends way over 5 percent. Indeed only us and France and maybe the Greeks even take defence seriously. America has been taken advantage of for decades since WW2. Originally posted by silvertop

Now I read you reply.....and we differ but until you wrote this I thought it was just a different perspective. Then you wrote this and I nearly choked on my tea. You deserve criticism for what you wrote there. I will repeat again, China is the second biggest economy by GDP yet it gives not too fecks about 'responsibilities and acts only in its self interest. Yet you praised its leader here and as far as I can tell you create a double standard for the US. You speak about 'acting' statesmanlike as if that matters two fecks.....really. Ok, here I'm going to write up just some of what I know about China. China has no freedom of expression. People are scared of state police who look for comments made against the government. They pursue and lock up anyone criticising the government and a percent never come back. China restricts its population's access to information. It's people can't use browsers in the way you can, everything is filtered. Try asking about Tiananmen Square in China! It bans the accessing of foreign information and websites just as it bans foreign companies and spies on and steals their intellectual property. China persecutes people for religious beliefs. Protestant churches are banned for example. China persecutes Tibet....a country it forcibly annexed and continues to ethnically cleanse. It is replacing Tibetans with Han Chinese and at some point this century this country will no longer exist as Tibet with its former culture.....that's happening now. Independent trade unions are illegal in China. Women's reproductive rights are still under heavy control of the state. Land rights in China are also very much a tool of the state. The repression of freedoms in Hong Kong. The threatening of its neighbours such as Taiwan and others.....the building of illegal islands expanding its territory to stake international sea claims. But....it's leader speaks with care and listens to his advisers. Edited by Stirlingsays (18 Jul 2018 7.52pm)

I don't support Trump beyond the fact that he defeated the 'establishment' and has shown up the liberal/Left for the witless f***s they really are. They can't handle the fact that he won. Just like Brexit.

As for Trump....Well, it was him or Clinton. Essentially it was a choice between a nationalist fronting a party who didn't like him and a semi progressive fronting up a progressive party who also didn't like her. Clinton won on the votes in a near fifty fifty tie but Trump won on the electoral system. Since he won he's done very well on growth in the economy....which is the main job of any president. Ultimately he will be judged on the economy. Trump doesn't trust the FBI and he sees Putin as a man with whom he can do business with. It was a verbal fumble that betrays how he feels. A lot is being made about nothing......and amusingly a lot of the fuss is being made by progressives who hate the idea of American nationalism....who all of a sudden seem to think the FBI are a good idea. It's so transparent.
