Hodgson deeming that Kane was the best corner-taker clearly believed in the efficacy of assigning him this role given that he had players who were effective in attacking the ball in the penalty area.He certainly didn't conclude that this deployment was otiose. I accept that we have a difference of opinion but HOL would be rather tedious if we all agreed with one another on a regular basis !

Yes, but hes not an utter s***e and gash player is he. He has proved that in Turkey and Real Madrid are sniffing around. Hmmmm what does that tell you? He didnt realize his potential at Palace. Whose job is it to ensure all players excel and realize their potential at our football club? He was given a hand full of starts in tough games then discarded to the bench and given 10 mins here and there. There is no way on earth that constitutes having a proper look at a foreign striker. Evening ! At the time we eventually bought Sorloth we were desperate for a striker. We went head to head with West Ham in trying to sign Jordan Hugil . He went to West ham for £10m and played a total of 22 minutes football for them. He's now back in the Championship. I'm sure the West Ham fans remember Hugil in the same way as we remember Sorloth. The harsh reality is that clubs like Palace - and West Ham - haven't got the luxury of time to develop players. In a league where there are no easy fixtures, players are expected to either hit the ground running or at a minimum show the potential to be successful. Sorloth did neither. Then you have to look at the players character - he didn't have the mentality to cope with the situation. Now he's had a fresh start and done well for himself but at no time did he even hint at being good enough for the Premier League . Such was his standing at the club that we now look like missing out on a massive windfall should he get a big move - you can't blame Hodgson for that. If you are going to blame Hodgson for the Sorloth situation then just bear in mind that Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah were both signed and then released by Chelsea. s*** happens.

Sorloth was roundly criticised on these boards for poor performances in cup games against Middlesbrough and Grimsby last season when the likes of Meyer and Riedewald also failed to impress in midfield. He got battered after missing a good chance to equalise in the last minute at home to Tottenham when we had only 9 pts. Roy sat him out after that and gradually our results improved. We've had a few of them: Tom Ince and that fop from Middlesbrough, Bamford, spring to mind. Dougie obviously saw the ability at that next level down, but I guess the cream of the scouts (if there are any) are the ones who can spot the players that can translate their form to the Prem level. Our main folly it seems was agreeing to include an option to buy for less than we paid for him. Edited by antipodeagle (11 Apr 2020 1.05pm)
