Having Belfast family who are very much DUP I can't say I support ditching NI. We have few enough patriots as it is. But I am torn about the wider Irish question.....In truth we shouldn't be there.....but there's the rub...there's a lot of people who shouldn't be where they are.

Been avoiding Brexit discussions for a week or so now because it was all the same noise, with both sides merely repeating the same positions over and over. But now, this is it. The vote on the WA is going to be lost. By a huge margin. Guessed as much from Mays body language at the press conference last night. I reckon we are heading for a GE to settle this matter. The Tories campaigning for a hard Brexit, Labour all over the place but ultimately offering a second referendum. Chatter out there about Tories collapsing their own Government because it is the only way to get rid of May. Local constituencies will move against Remainer Tory MP's. Suspect a June election. But lets see. Who knows with this insanity?

So, we give NI to the Republic, let all the NI residents who want to remain British move over here, and shift all those of non indigenous origins out of Birmingham/Bradford/etc to NI...... Win win

British people very uninformed about the Republic of Ireland. Generally, there is not a great desire to 'have' Northern Ireland anymore. Ireland would certainly not pay any money for it. The UK would have to pay the Republic billions over a long period for The Republic to be interested at all. We generally can't deal with our own problems without outside investment - let alone take on any more problems.

Of course it is an NI issue foremost. But the DUP, are they representative of what the population there is thinking? Are the remain MPs in Parliament doing this?

We generally can't deal with our own problems without outside investment - let alone take on any more problems. Quite. Despite all the noise, I would imagine that the last thing Dublin would ever want would be reunification. Not only would it unleash a wave of barbaric Loyalist terrorism (and lets not forget that in the last couple of years of the Troubles, the Loyalists were far more barbaric in their actions within NI itself than Republicans) but the financial burdens would be immense. Just having to replicate the NHS expectations of the NI population alone would be a nightmare, without all the costs of maintaining infrastructure and so on. The idea of a united Ireland might be cause for a jolly old sing-song and sentimental utterings but the hard, cold realities are a different matter altogether. I have a sister who lives in the Republic and she is constantly berating people who look at this issue through rose-tinted glasses.
