Indeed Willo, and it has been much discussed on this thread. However, how often has Hodgson eased the burden of these poor unfortunates by naming a bench with a few younger players on it, and giving them a 30 minute run out? Hardly ever.

Survival is the objective and Mr Hodgson has relied on his experienced PL players.
Besides, some of the youngsters might not be ready for the demands of PL football.

Yes but, is this Roy setting out the objective or is it SP and the board?

Or is it just that the evident financial reality sets the objective for us?

Willo, we had 8 games spare last season, from memory only Pierrick got an opportunity. I think I can say quite confidently that if the RB spot hadn't become free due to injury then we would have never seen how good a player AWB is. Sadly Hodgson is risk adverse to the extreme and he will run the "experienced" players into the ground.

This is spot on. My only observation is that I don't think Palace lack ambition as such. We just can't spend any more than we do because of FFP. We are at the glass ceiling, and the team is roughly as good as it can be (in terms of results certainly) until the club itself gets bigger and better, which Parish is trying to do.

I think this is the crux of where I disagree. I think we could be better than the sum of our current parts. Which is fine. We have different and well-debated opinions.

Roy put AWB in, then kept him there as first choice even after Ward was fit. He has promoted Mitchell and often leaves PVA on the bench to keep him in. He's played Eze in more or less every game, mostly as a starter. It's not like he has some aversion to young players.

Perhaps it's as simple as the other young players we have not being good enough?

Pierrick looked ok against Norwich when he came on last Christmas then didn't get a look in til we were 4 down vs Liverpool. Roy felt the lad owed him a bottle of wine for the 6 minutes he had on the pitch!

Last season we really control any games enough to bring on youngsters as are wins were mostly narrow and late.

I don't really understand why he couldn't have added a youngster or Meyer in the 9 subs we have vs Wolves. With Kouyate, McArthur, and Luka on the bench you are hardly short of cover for centre midfield, surely 1 of them could have been dropped to give the opportunity to a younger player had the scoreline been favourable with 20 minutes to go?

Yep, 1 point out of 8 games playing some shocking stuff along the way and yet Roy still would not allow a couple of youngsters into the side. We could have experimented with Pierrick, Dreher (if fit), Woods, Kirby and I’m sure a few others were knocking at the door. Nothing wrong with giving them 45 minutes in each of those last 8 matches.

Maybe Mr Hodgson has deemed that the players mentioned are simply not of the required standard at present so there is little point in "Experimenting" with them in the challenging PL.

It could be. But what does that say about him and his favourites who contrived to lose 7 on the trot in the most abject manner, and what motivation does it give those youngsters?

You made reference to "His favourites".
In the final analysis our vastly experienced manager exercises his professional judgement game on game and selects the squad he believes is the best for that particular match.

Why would either question matter if the young players in question aren't good enough for the Premier league?

We'll never know, they weren't given the opportunity. What we do know is that we were mathematically safe, so sitting a couple on the bench for experience and motivation would have done no harm. What we also know is that the players RH selected and therefore deems good enough for the Premier league managed to lose 7 on the trot. A good opportunity to have a look at what we have coming through missed and completely risk free.
