Government is fine with turning a blind eye as long as the stink of what we do doesn't cause a stink too close to home. Beyond oil, look at the vast amount of weapons we've sold the Saudis and how they are used. Whatever you say about the Saudis and how they run their country, at least they haven't threatened to nuke us. F1 is getting criticised for banning the Russian GP but staying in Bahrain etc. But, again, they might not live by our rules but they're not a threat to us either.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

The current situation is clearly pressing, and for me while we should give Putin room to move and a potential for a way out or 'pretend victory', our own cowardice doesn't come as part of that package, or some weird partial subservience to Russia coupled with attacks on the West that we see from our resident lost souls who arbitrarily detach themselves from a new demographic or aspect of their own society ever week. As such I'm pleased he's facing serious opposition and that we're doing the best that we can for Ukraine within sensible constraints. Putin realistically, as I pointed out, doesn't respect agreements, and will no doubt incrementally ignore them in such a way that the West doesn't know how to address that. You avoid much of that by principled showing of strength. Not weakness, or lapping up 'his' propaganda just because it thumbs the eye at aspects of our own society we may not like. As if Putin even gives a sh!t about what is happening on that front, with regard to his actions. This whole 'be fair to Putin' and this wouldn't ever have happened angle is risible to the extreme.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Nato ‘hypnotised by Russian aggression’ Isn't that a fact. Their members are a 'paper tiger' - Trump. For once he's right.

With regard to the alleged far right in Ukraine. They polled 1.6% in the last election and have zero seats. Hardly a close run thing either. There are probably more right wing supporters in the UK, Italy and Germany than Ukraine. Extremists make a lot of noise making out that they are well supported when the reality is that they are just that. Extremists.
