So he's there by default more than anything.

Interesting that the report in the Mail had WH as our best player with 7/10 - but then again they don't have an agenda. Surely the fact that we haven't scored in 10 of our last 11 PL games is the issue we should be addressing. In these 11 games we've conceded 23, but 10 of those have been at Man City. 13 in the other 9 is pretty reasonable.

Not as bad as many think...being scapegoated.

Is there any point to this thread continuing - seriously?

Do we need a new (ie better) goalkeeper? Of course - who doesn't?

Then why didn't we buy one? Who knows (except the long procession of managers/coaches and SP)?

Would Speroni do any better? Who knows (except the long procession of managers/coaches)? Their answer seems to be no so far...

Would we have done any better against Man City with Speroni in goal? Are you serious? If by better you mean 4-0 or even 3-0, then you have a strange idea of 'better'. City are totally steamrollering teams at the moment, and 5-0 is by no means a discrace for a team in our position and state of mind. Remmember those playground games where 'somehow' all the best players got on the same side, and they gleefully roasted your miserable lot 12-0? Welcome to the premiership, it's the same thing! Pointless blaming individual players for a collective collapse in these circumstances.

The BIG problem with our goalkeeper, if you hadn't noticed, is that we CANNOT get the ball in the opposition net, leaving us absolutely NO margin for error at the back and little confidence.

From what I saw of the match - MoD and other highlights - we played very well in the first half, and you could see that the manager and coach are having a beneficial effect. Against weaker teams than City/United/Chelsea/etc we will do better for the whole 90 mins and pick up points.

Ok -

2013-2014
signed by Pulis who played Speroni

2014-15
Pulis leaves - Warnock & Pardew play Speroni for that season

2015-16
Speroni gets injured and Pardew brings in Alex Mccarthy as number one. Mccarthy turns out not to be very good.

2016-17
Pardew tries replacing him again with Mandanda. Pardew gets fired and Allardyce takes over.

2017-18
Allardyce goes. In comes DeBoer who tries to replace him.

So yes, I'd say he's there by default wouldn't you? Not one manager has rated him highly enough to go "he's my number one and I back him". They've all tried to sign a replacement.

Pls don't give me that sh1t about trying to sign a replacement. How hard is it for PL managers to sign a goalkeeper ffs?

Pardew didn't try to sign, he did sign one - twice! Unfortunately they did get "Pardewed" though.

And DeBoer wasn't here long enough for his tea to go cold but was looking.

I'd give up, Hennessey haters are so one eyed it's unbelievable. They remind me of Angry Frank from the Harry Enfield programme.

As I say, I know for a fact that they have actively, almost aggressively been trying to replace him. He wasn't signed as a number 1 and isn't wanted as a number 1. Obviously is harder to sign a replacement than we know.

But you and others were advocating signing Bergovic long before he signed for Bournemouth and yet as soon as they bid for him they got him, did we even try?

Budget was allocated for Sakho until Jan. Risky but a risk worth taking to get him in. Think we'll see the Striker and Goalie positions finally sorted in Jan.
