I made the decision to travel up from the south coast to witness this garbage.Total and utter dross and YET AGAIN our supporters have been short-changed at Selhurst Park. My patience has run thin and I was venting my spleen at the game. Maybe we should all wave white handkerchiefs in the air in protest as they do in Spain. Well I didn’t bother going to the Bournemouth game even though I have a season ticket. And it was the first home league game I had missed since 2015. Going last night, travelling from the south coast like yourself, never entered my head. If I’m not being entertained I can accept that if we are regularly winning matches, but we aren’t. If it wasn’t for my family and friends making match days such an enjoyable social occasion I’d be sorely tempted to go and watch local non league football ( no VAR ! ).

LOL Nowhere in the Laws of the game (they are not rules) does it mention 'studs first off the ground' What law 12 (and yes I do understand them) says is basically in the opinion of the referee is the challenge careless, reckless or using excessive force . At a push ,and Im going against what I saw live here ,you might deem it careless which is a free kick without caution. Even the next level up ,reckless would be a free kick and a yellow card offence To be sent off you are saying it was a reckless challenge that used excessive force and endangered the opponent. If thats your view fair enough , its not mine . My main gripe however is not that someone got sent off but that VAR sent them off with their interpretation of the incident . VAR is not there (or shouldn't be ) to re -referee the game , its there to clarify fact .

I must have taken leave of my senses which is quite normal these days. Seared in my memory are those days in the lower divisions when we actually emerged victorious at Selhurst Park and supporters left the ground feeling chipper even when all the points were not attained. At present, game upon game, we leave the ground in fits of despair wearing faces like thunderclaps voices growling with hot-boil bile. I am seriously considering sparing myself the journey to Selhurst Park for the rest of the season. Edited by Willo (05 Jan 2024 9.16am)

Nope, nope, nope nope... and then, hang on, the very last angle - OFF YOU GO!! Absolutely no doubt that was a reckless and dangerous move (albeit unintended) that could have broken a leg. The absence of intent / malice should mitigate the punishment not the sending off. Dull game btw. 2 good-ish sides cancelled each other out.

This with knobs on! But the corollary being we stay up with relatively limited resources. A debate that will, no doubt, continue to rage.

I have been in conversation with supporters who really would not be in a hissy-fit if we got relegated, with the view that we might actually win a few more games at Selhurst Park, we might score more goals and be actually entertained. a Few Thoughts on last nights game... Franca looks promising, he was the only One who showed any inclination to pass forward. sometimes it didn't work but least hes trying. For his first start it was a good one. I would have liked to have seen him in Eze's position. However, his defending/defensive positioning needs work. Often just taking up positions rather than putting pressure on the ball allowing himself To be passed by easily. And it was never a Red. Studs up, yes, Reckless no. Yellow for me.

To sum it up in one word….’ROYBALL’. My feelings go out to the hundreds of young children who attended for the first time last night with their families and schools in pouring rain. Many were too young to understand that this doesn’t happen every week and will be put off football or will want to support Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City etc. Happy New Year everyone (Roy excluded unless he leaves soon).

I've just seen the incident in a video on Twitter and honestly think a red card was the right decision. I don't suppose it was malicious at all, but unfortunately for the EFC player I don't think that's any defence. If it had gone unpunished I would've wondered what the VAR was looking at, and if it had been a Palace player I don't think I'd have felt any differently. The disappointing thing though was that, whether he should've gone or not, we failed to take advantage of having the extra man. I feel like the chance for winning the tie has now gone and don't really fancy our chances in the replay. On the plus side, it sounded like Richards had an excellent game and Ahamada was involved quite a bit when he came on as well. I'd be happy to see Ahamada be given more game time. I must have been at a different game. I thought Ahamada did absolutely nothing and looked so weak on and off the ball. I’ve yet to be convinced in his short appearances that he offers anything? Perhaps a different manager will get something out of him?

By the letter of the law the challenge was over the top studs showing and yes could have broke Clyne's leg. Therefore, VAR (not the ref) gave a red card. However, anyone who has played the game would see it was a strikers challenge that was not intended to be malicious and whilst did catch Clyne, barely glanced his leg. If the ref had done his job properly he should have given Calvert-Lewin a yellow card and we could all have gone back to sleep. I respectfully disagree, I hope and hope so sincerely that no player going in to a tackle intends to hurt or maim a fellow player. However having said that, dangerous play is just that, it matters not that it was a glancing blow what matters is that it had the potential to seriously injure a fellow player and therefore it was reckless dangerous play and the red card was very much the right decision. As for the pundits who think otherwise, then that is a good reason for not involving them in any future VAR as some seem to want and suggest. It was quite interesting to listen to Mr. Dykes after the game when of course he thought it was the wrong decision, on the other hand, had the tackle been on his player, I can just see him on the touchline jumping up and down asking for a red card. No one likes to see red cards in a game but players safety must always be the first priority of the officials, so well done VAR!
