Lots of people on here talking about facts that Roy always makes late subs which doesnt ring true to me, so I've checked out the last 10 games and these ARE the facts about his subs.....
chelsea 79 / 90
brighton 59 / 70
man city 34 / 80 / 81 / 91
liverpool 45 / 68 / 84 / 95
bournemouth 29 / 69 / 69 / 86
west ham 82 / 87
luton 49 / 54 / 80 / 80
everton 67 / 83 / 89
burnley 58 / 70 / 70 / 86
tottenham 60 / 70 / 70 / 79

I dont think that qualifies as always makes late subs.

In fact the Brighton game was a terrible substitution in taking off Ayew who was doing a great cover of Mitchell and then playing an unfit Eze in his place on the left. The Chelsea match was calling out for earlier substitutions as Chelsea had done as our players were knackered. Not unlike today but we got away with it :-) Some of those substitutions you show were probably for injuries as was done in the Man City draw which probably gave us a result which wouldn’t have happened without forced changes. I still think his subs are done too late and in many cases it’s like for like which doesn’t change our formation to give the opposition something to think about? I still think Hodgson is too much old school concentrating more on the defensive side whereas the younger managers have changed with the times and attack in numbers. We got away with it today as Brentford were short of their best players. They still gave us problems, especially after their substitutions until Hodgson made changes which in my opinion should have been earlier? Very happy with the win but I’m not going overboard about it as we have much harder games ahead and those around us are now getting results other than the bottom 2

I’m chuckling to myself after our MoTD highlights. The commentator makes quite a song and dance in raving about Mateta’s ‘dummy’ for Eze’s goal. Now, I may be wrong, but I’m quite sure he tried to control the ball and it just ran under his foot. Grateful for any other thoughts here but was amusing for me in it seeming so bizarre and only of course, because we won today!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Mateta's hold up play was very good today and long may it continue. It looked at the start Anderson was playing on left and Guehi on the right and that did not help with the early goal we conceded. Deserved win but Brentford had chances to get a goal back before Hughes and Franca came on. It would have been a tough watch if Wissa poked in the cross with the goal at his mercy with 10 or so minutes to go but to be fair once the subs came on we shored things up.

Problem is that Roy is just plain out of touch. They get 5 sets of fresh legs and it immediately changes the whole balance. Credit to our guys for hanging in there. But this is why we get so many injuries. Needlessly overworked players

As simple as it sounds it is true. ‘Roy being out of touch.’ He isn’t programmed into using 4 or 5 subs and it is modern thinking/modern football.

We are constantly on the back foot after 70minutes because other teams make subs and it is actually a problem everyone complains about regarding Roy other seasons, however the newer rule of using 5 subs has highlighted we are constantly under pressure due to teams having fresh legs coupled with tactical changes (in some cases) and we are under pressure due to Roy not moving with the times related to managerial nuances.

Leaving your first 11 on for the duration of the game or for 80+ minutes is outdated - similar to playing 4-4-2.

I’m delighted with the win but lets not kid ourselves here - against a very poor Brentford side - ravaged by injuries.

Yet somehow we made them look good in the last 20, when they were there to be put to the sword - why because Roy won’t use his subs - consequently we’re running out of legs..!!

Just typical Roy and that’s what’s been happening for weeks..!!

For me todays game and result just papers over the cracks - Roy is still so stubborn in that he will not make use of the potential that is available to him..!!

No doubt today would have saved his neck - but you can see from the last 20 - what there is to look forward to for the rest of the season - same old, same old - when the potential is there - just so frustrating.

Yes we’ll stay up but it will be totally uninspiring and painful to watch..!!

As I said at the start of the game - irrespective of the result I’d still replace Roy - but it won’t happen..!!

Parish quite happy he doesn’t have to spend any money - whilst all we’ve got to look forward to for the rest of the season is abject mediocrity..!!

This in a nutshell!

I thought we played well, Eze was fitter making runs into the box, Olise was outstanding, Ayew and Mateta played well, i thought Richards did, and has played well at DM, fullbacks played well, i dont think Lerma is any better than average, and i thought Guehi was not quite on it, but 3 points, Roy will be here until the end of the season, IMO correctly, we need 2/3 players on loan to bolster the squad until the end of the season, then poach a decent manager, not the dross that is available, there is a reason why they are available

A splendid victory and much needed.

I did predict a win, albeit 2-1 ! I just had a 'Feeling in my water' that we would emerge victorious against a Brentford team out of sorts, and my prognostication of victory probably shocked all and sundry on HOL !

I agree with the comments on Mateta. He looks like he’s enjoying his football and linking well with Olise and Eze. Our other unsung hero in recent games has been Richards. Yesterday he looked like a defensive midfielder. He tackled strongly , won the ball for us on more than one occasion and could spot and make a decent pass. Definitely merits his place in the team.

Playing midfield is one of the hardest positions in football as any mistake is noticed so experience does matter.

Richards has been up and down with his performances because he is having to learn the job. I think that is why Roy is persevering with him as he can see game on game improvement.
