There is a distinction to be drawn between holding a political view and using insulting language or encouraging the breaking of laws. Fox will be a hero to many for his stance on ULEZ but, whether we like it or not, a small TV channel which relies on advertising and donations to run can't be associated with that kind of behaviour. The BBC and ITV are big enough to survive the fall out from Jimmy Saville and Phillip Schofield, but the sad truth is that GBN is not right now. It has to be seen on the right side of respectability. If it just sticks to right of centre politics, it will be OK. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (04 Oct 2023 5.11pm)

Yes I'm aware of it. It's always fascinated me that the internet has never really been properly regulated. Considering it acts as a sort of real life proxy (or second life, for those who know what that is) it's amazing and horrendous in equal measure that it's not properly policed. Like a Library is, for example. With rules and regulations. It's probably because it's impossible to do so due to its scale, but I do think people take it so much for granted now that it's basically a massive playground of limited or unenforcible rules that it's somehow a bad thing to apply laws and decency to what is effectively a public space. Terrible post.

Jury led decision tho... not the judge, who would have banged them to rights (quite rightly). Reckon there's thousands of instances of a Jury reaching poor verdicts every year. Probably more. This is another one. Don't agree that one case makes a trend though... see earlier post about successful prosecutions, of which there are loads... You'd need to find data that shows disproportionate jury acquittals for such cases vs successful prosecutions to prove otherwise.

However, both you and I know that it's been used to attack the right and....actually it's more than that, it's the right to speak your mind. From Russell Brand to Jo Brand to Lawrence Fox commentators/comedians/plonkers, whoever it is.....the powerful mustn't be allowed to beat down voices....we have been talking about 1984 for a long time and it's an old meme but more prophetic each year. A chilling effect is being allowed to gag free speech in this country.

Well, I'm not suggesting that corporates are happy for their property to be damaged and that it's just accepted. However, you asked for an unacceptable outcome and when it happens it always seems to be for the left. As for trends....well I can only repeat this latest instance. Chris Packham literally makes a programme on Channel 4 saying is it time to break the law for climate change and nothing happens....But Lawrence Fox is positive towards blade runners in London and is nicked. Apparently Packham is taking the government to court. Just how well funded must he be for that? Yet Calvin Robinson now can't even pay for his flat in London.

Edited by SW19 CPFC (04 Oct 2023 5.40pm) Well, we disagree on all points there. I grew up in better times regarding free speech.....we have regressed and we continue to.
