In American football (NFL not "soccer" the ball is actually in play or an average of 18 minutes and that goes on for hours.

Somebody mentioned rugby - tends to be between 30-45 mins in play. There is probably more time wasting than football.

Always been my bugbear! Clock should restart once ball has been fed in and stop if the referee's whistle goes again.

So the two keepers between them had the ball not in play for perhaps 20 minutes. Sounds as if the point in my post above may be more relevant than I thought.

Probably longer when you think most goalkicks mean the ball being rolled to the full back then two square passes and back to the goalkeeper. Rinse and repeat.
