The only consolation is that we have been playing top sides and teams in top form. United, Newcastle, Fulham and dare I say, Bright*n.
If we have a poor result against a lesser side, then Vieira's position will be in danger.

The big problem is who replaces him. It would have to be someone who could make an impact.

My personal opinion is that should we continue on a poor run, keep sliding down the table and our PL place is in real danger with about 10 games left, thoughts might turn to a change of manager.
At present, a change is not on the radar.

Does anyone think our players would have been/ would be capable of being managed by Sean Dyche? To answer my own question, I don't. Which is quite telling about our squad's mentality.

I don't and have said as much on here a couple of times. Notwithstanding his appointment at Everton I don't think he would look at our group and want to manage them.

With regard to Vieira I'd defy any manager to get goals consistently from the players we have. It was absolutely criminal we didn't get a better attacking option in January.

As I've also said before this reminds me of Roy's last season when he was constantly criticized for using one bang average player over another average player.

There's been a lot of chat about Eze but he has never looked a no10 or midfield player IMO. He looks an out and out left sided attacker. Perhaps PV could have used him there Saturday but by the same token he may have wanted to use him as an impact sub given how limited his bench is.

Makes you wonder what they do in training ?

Top level professional footballers should be able control a ball and pass to own team surely ?

Just for my own amusement if nothing else CC - one of my fondest memories of what was an unhappy time in my youth was my uncles taking me to the Den at every available opportunity as an albeit futile attempt at conversion. One of them used to consistently, and constantly, scream the phrase 'What do you do all week?' at his own team when the simplest mistakes were made.

Still makes me laugh but I have always maintained that he had a point.

I know it might seem unfair to put so much blame on one player but Mateta was terrible on Saturday. Brighton were always going to have more of the ball but the number of times good opportunities to break broke down due to his inability to control even a simple pass was staggering. Edouard came on but you could have been forgiven for not noticing such was his impact. Obviously we have no input, but I genuinely don't know what the answer is up top:

Mateta - can't control the ball, pass or head
Edouard - looks a bit lazy and disinterested
Ayew - carries no attacking threat

Personally against Brentford I would play Ayew up top but solely on the basis that at least he works hard and retains possession and is better with his back to goal. Mateta and Edouard's inability to hold the ball up and bring others into play is becoming a serious issue. Hopefully Lokonga and/or Ahamada can at least add a bit more dynamism to the midfield, while McArthur will bring some talking back to the pitch.

Context Willo is everything. £100m over FOUR windows is not great in PL terms for clubs outside the big 6/7. Fulham spent that in one window on a previous occasion they came up and went straight down again.

Last summer (2022) alone:
- W Ham spent £160m (nett £147m)
- Forest £141m (nett £135m)
- Wolves £123m (nett £71m)

We had gone several years before then, as you well know, spending virtually nothing and allowing a mature squad to age to crisis point in Summer 2021 when we spent the grand total of £66m.

Our current 5 year nett spend places us 16th in the table of current PL members. Of those below us two (Bournemouth and Brentford) are clubs with only 2 or 3 years in the PL and the other two are clubs who are further along the development road than us, namely Leicester and Brigh...

Yep, you read that back and it's little wonder we've only scored 20 goals this season.

I agree, play Ayew up top. He will at least press, keep the ball and draw fouls. I'd consider playing Eze behind him, although he's hardly been setting the world on fire.

Hopefully Macca will stay fit and play a part and the new boys make a difference

I'm 'fanboying' some of your posts this morning TL and like this one again.

I honestly must of missed where the criticisms of Mateta came from previously so somewhat 'stood up' for him however he was beyond awful vs Brighton. At one point he actually knocked over Webster, completely outmuscling him, retained the ball and made some ground. ST holder next to me said 'why doesn't he do that more often' and I suggested I think he just lacks the coordination to physically achieve what he mentally intends the majority of the time.

Edouard I'd argue still looks lacking in confidence/assurance of his position more than disinterested to me. Still better than Mateta but I don't think Ayew is a bad shout at all. The only argument there is his lack of goals but in current company not an issue. He'd at least win/retain the ball more often and God forbid we might actually start building something constituting attacks from open play.

I understand your comments, however the fact remains that the club have spent nigh on £100 Mill whilst Vieira has been at the helm so he has been supported in the transfer market.

Suffice to say that despite this expenditure there are still glaring deficiencies in the squad.

No, we have spent 132.4M Euros since 4th July 2021, PVs 1st day, with 14 players in, at a deficit of 127.2m euros

You may be right about Edouard, although towards the end of his time at Celtic their fans were also criticising him for being lazy (rightly or wrongly). Vieira keeps giving both Edouard and Mateta opportunities, but neither is making a compelling case. I actually said JPM should start against Brighton simply by virtue of his willingness to run around like a Spaniel, but his lack of ability really stuck out on Saturday and I'm on the verge of giving up on him (I think his effort means I forgive him more than others). I do think if his sole job was a goal poacher he'd be good as most of his shots are on target, but the way play means we need more than that as we create so few chances! I will also point out that despite advocating for Ayew to start up top the last time I suggested that Vieira duly obliged and he was rubbish
