First of all I share the massive disappointment with the result. But I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and defend PV - a bit. As far as the subs were concerned, Brentford had just thrown on three sets of fresh legs. Sometimes you need to respond to what the other guy does. Clearly PV thought we needed fresh legs, especially in midfield. Sending Ayew on made sense. Eze wasn't having his best game in my view and, whatever his faults, Ayew is always energetic. Who could he send on for a tiring Schlupp? There really weren't many options on the bench. No one is going to pretend Luca is the player he once was and I do get a sense of foreboding when he comes on but he really isn't as awful as some on here seem to think. People have suggested Hughes is a better option but he wasn't even on the bench (injured?). MacArthur would have been ideal but he wasn't available either. The only other option on the bench was Phillips who I have hardly seen play. The problem with going to five at the back with Mitchell on for Olise seemed to be that the players didn't then have a clue what they were supposed to be doing. They have played five at the back before, they train for that formation, they should have been able to handle it better than they did. Instead there was a collective mental breakdown with even Guaita making some God awful clearances. And the centre backs have to take responsibility for the absolutely appalling defending for the equaliser. We do need a couple of incoming transfers that's for sure and clearly we need to keep Wilf.

Milivojevic provides no freshness at all, slow, not mobile enough for the rigours of the PL.I shudder when he is introduced into the fray and I admit to exhaling a walrus moan when he ran on to the hallowed turf. Apropos the centre-backs I have been consistently critical of Andersen as a defender and I have not been overly impressed with Guehi either. For the darned equaliser we had 4 players around 2 Brentford players before the cross was delivered, Andersen was in acres of space marking nobody and Brentford had a 2v2 situation in the centre of the box.Mitchell caught ball-watching and should have got closer to Wissa.A catalogue of woe. I’m not with the full on criticism of Luka coming on. All that was required was a bulking up of the midfield with perhaps Ayew on the right and Luka alongside Dacoure and Schlupp. It was messing around with the defence and practically all the others on the pitch that caused the problems. PV screwed up a win last night and thank goodness we got a point.

As I recall from last night, the first thing he did was commit a foul and give away a free kick. Please desist from playing him PV. We're we really that tired towards the end of the game? Our marking in the build up to their goal was woeful. But, disappointing as last night's result was, we're still only 5 games in. No cause for alarm.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

We need an old head in these situations to make sure the doors are closed, because the young lads we have obviously don’t read these situations anywhere near well enough, it is happening to often. Going by his interview even the usually cool PV is getting annoyed with the situation.

Milivojevic's contributions are merely fouling and giving away free kicks inviting pressure.Slow, cumbersome, unable to copy with the intensity of the PL. A total liability.

When Brentford Scored PV was really animated on the touchline last night, you could easily see was pretty upset. Originally posted by Putitout

Surprised by the Luca criticism as I saw the true offender as Mitchell. He made error after error after coming on; and he was literally marking no-one when THAT cross came over. I am with Wilf with the frustration as he must have watched that free header and thought: WTF. Depressingly, Mitchell (and Olise - almost there) needs a bit more game time before he was the beast who all but fended off Man City single handed last season.

Maybe PV should sing his song in his head before making substitutions. "He knows exactly what we need....Olise in attack, Mitchell at the back".... Replacing Olise with Mitchell was exactly what we did not need.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Going by his interview even the usually cool PV is getting annoyed with the situation. I would propose that if you are the manager it is your duty to choose the right tactics and players for any situation you assess, and to have trained them, therefore PV is at fault. He could well be animated at Johnstone coming on and missing a last minute penalty we might of won but would again be responsible if Johnstone taking it is his decision. Bad worker - tools springs to mind. The context here being that I don't think there's need for massive reaction just yet but it is something PV needs to address and he has to take responsibility for not managing us to see that game out yesterday which I, and I think many others (including Wilf), are inclined to believe we could have done.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I think even PV he understands that he screwed up. By changing the team so dramatically we had no attacking outlet. We went from Eze, Olise, Wilf, Eddie and schlupp to eddie and wilf. We should have brought on Eboiwei if we were going 4-5-1. or 5-4-1 That would at least have given us another attacking option. We just kept feeding the ball back to them.
