How amazing to see America, the west's super-power, glued to a Taliban press conference.

It's as though they were awaiting instructions.

Perhaps the slightest shred of good to come from this, and it is a tad self-regarding concerning how we all interact with each other, is there seems to be, grudgingly at times, a general consensus about the piss poor quality of political leadership, across the board, in the Western World at the moment.

We are all being played. That much is as clear as day to me. And we all come from a collective social class who have paid the real price, at least in terms of Western lives, for not only Afghanistan but every other insane Western interference in the matters of other countries.

I am sure that within a few days we would all have retreated to our usual trenches and be back lobbying the usual BS at each other, but on this terrible tragedy, there appears a political unity of a kind that offers at least a minuscule fraction of hope that perhaps we can be rid of this parasitical political class we have lumbered ourselves with if we all collectively acknowledge what a shower of utter f***wits they are and don't let that wisdom fade.

Yes, a little window of accord.

The politicians and media are alas, veering towards cringing defeatism and deference to 'resolute' Biden.

It's going to be awful.

Perhaps it is just me, and I am more than willing to be shot down here for being a paranoid loon, but the Taliban PR machine seems a tad more 'polished' than perhaps you might have expected?

Seen a couple of sources, and not the usual Right Wing types I favour, already making claims that behind the scenes it's already mass round-ups and so on.

Maybe it's all a ploy to keep things stable until the Kabul Airport farce plays out but my spider-sense is tingling just a little bit that there is something odd going on.

Not safe for work.

Taliban are already dragging people out of their homes and shooting them in the street.
Young girls are spared however taken away and handed over to the leadership for them to decide what to do with them.

Not surprising unfortunately. The 'we've changed' veneer of these Taliban press conferences will soon wear thin.

The Taliban will have little authority at local level (I would have thought), in order to keep their ranks from settling old scores, looting and taking women.

Whilst the Taliban were a coherent unit in their goal of removing western forces, no doubt there will be elements who have different interpretations of Islam, such that women will be abused in their idealised society.
A bit like any political party, they fight together to get elected and then some MP's may have their own personal agenda, alongside the Party Line once in Government.

and now the media are bringing to our attention that the UK will be welcoming 20,000 Afghan refugees.

IF, this is going to be the proposal,....

1. What measures will be adopted to ensure no terrorist elements get this free trip to the UK ?

2. After Covid has plunged the UK into massive debt and the NHS to its knees, does the UK have the capacity to take an additional burden of such size ?

3. Will Welfare be available to Afghans, alongside those given to our troops, and others exposed to extreme conditions ? Will those suffering from PTSE be given such assistance as 'Care in the Community', which has previously left a significant number of ex-service people living on the UK streets ?

You couldn't make it up, Trump is banned from Twitter but the Taliban aren't. No doubt some will defend that.
