Far more likely we are being used to pump up the selling price and SP is not happy

It is also likely to increase the fees other clubs request for other players when dealing with us. Imagine you’re in talks with Palace about selling us a player and we are saying we can’t afford 20-25m and then they read stories like this? It could be damaging to other deals we are chasing.

Parish has made an important intervention here. Liverpool overprice their players, I think that's clear now and we overpaid the odds last time. When I heard about the buy back that was the giddy limit for me....25 million is a massive outlay and a lot of risk on an unproven striker. If the deal is anything like this I hope we have started looking elsewhere. Let the newly promoted clubs or a desperate club take these kind of slave deals. Villa paid only a bit more for a young English striker who has more experience and more goals and who looks like he's already settling into life in the PL. The only way I would say 25m is fair is if at least 10m was based on reaching targets like 15 goals in a season and England caps, not 25 appearances or avoid relegation.

Ha, just seen that Parish has spoken out again on Twitter. Just like I (and probably others) were saying, Sky's 'correction' earlier was a typically weak retraction and just acted like they had jumped the gun on an offer for Brewster as opposed to the complete fabrication that it was. SP has just tweeted this: [Tweet Link] Reacting in this way is not wise. Publish and be damned a much safer policy.

However you could add we always end up being shafted by Liverpool in the transfer market. That was the policy for previous windows. I had thought this year's policy had changed to looking for younger players?

I still hope we're pursuing that policy and remain interested in him, as he is a young talent with exciting potential. I think we should consider something like £15m up front with £5m performance-related (not appearances) add-ons eg £1M for every 10 goals and another £1M for every 10 assists. That way if we pay the full £20M over 2-3 seasons we know he is making a valid contribution. With regard to a possible buy-back, I think we should base it on his market value at that time (not a set price now) with Liverpool being offered a £10M discount. So if one of the top 6 start sniffing around and offer £50M, Liverpool could exercise their option for £40M, which should see both us and them satisfied with the outcome. Let's hope the club is still interested in him and SP is considering a sensibly structured deal.

I still think the best deal here is a loan with an option to buy. The deal for Bats, if we are to believe the rumour is that it’s a loan deal with an obligation to buy. If that is truly the case then we are very likely to buy him permanently and he would have to be considered the clubs main striker. Any other forward is for competition and depth...even if we do play two strikers. Are we really in a hurry to spend 25m on a substitute? I say get him on loan with an option to buy for a set fee. If that was possible of course.
