Oh they were deadly serious but they had no intentions of going above the fee they bidded.

Players are only worth, what someone is willing to pay. No other club met Watfords valuation, if he any good, a bigger club would have taken him at the asking price.

With respect, I really don't get the logic behind that thinking.

The big Spanish clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid have elections to decide who their president is, so their transfer dealings are a bit political - they strategically leak all sorts of details to the press for exactly the reasons you describe.

Like most English clubs, ours isn't a democracy. Even if the whole fan base was furious with the owners all the time, its irrelevant. Unless you have tens of millions to buy them out, they stay where they are, even if they don't want to. Ask Newcastle or West Ham fans.

I just don't see why the club would bother with the kind of spin and bluff you suspect. Your opinion and mine just aren't important enough for them to bother. Possibly quite rightly.

I take your point and you may well be right. From my perspective though it seems to happen over and over again. We wait until the very last day, fail to land a target and then Parish gives an interview saying that us fans don't understand how difficult it is etc.

In this case it feels like a token bid was placed to distract from Benrahma clearly rejecting us for West Ham, with the amount we bid clearly nowhere near what they wanted. Ironically the £32m bid seemingly would have been enough to get Benrahma if he had wanted to come.

His value is only going to drop playing in the championship.

Okay...so...let's say we really like Sarr and wonder if it might be possible within our limited budget.

What would people have us bid up to? And when?

Just stroll straight up to Vicarage Road with an offer of £47.9 million on Sept. 17?

Delusional.

We are hoping no big club truly bids. Then we are bidding late and low (but as high as we dare) hoping other clubs aren't ready to gazump (or even match) us.

I’d much prefer we signed the next Sarr or the next Zaha to be more precise...at a fraction of the price.

We tried to sign a ready made striker with Benteke and haven’t been able to afford another one since. That didn’t work out long term.

I know it’s not easy. You can’t gamble the future of the club on a maybe...but I’d like to see a mix. This year the club have sort of done that. Couple of young players with a couple of proven ish players.

Agreed.

The point is that Watford didn't want to sell him whilst Stoke did want Butland off their hands. This type of last minute bidding for a player will only ever work if the seller is willing.

We may still pick up a free transfer or hold onto our money until the next window when clubs below the Premier league will really be struggling.

I think it was worth chancing our arm but it was likely that Watford told us they had no interest in selling and that was the end of it.

Then we meet the other scenario of having our bid turned down as the club don't have enough time to find a replacement which has happened to us on more than one occasion

SP will be breathing a huge sigh of relief, I was amazed he got sucked into this PL money-pit at all.

Big money signings how would you compare Sarr to Ayew (cost 2.5 million?) for instance.

Sakho Benteke big loss-makers.

SP has done so much for us, doesn't have to prove anything.

A very good point. And we have rescued a gk crisis, by signing a very good gk who does admittedly need to rediscover his best form. Personally I am glad we tested Watford's willingness to sell Sarr. Watford weren't willing to sell at the price we could offer to pay. Hopefully in a few months time and with a few high wage earners off our books, we can go back in with another offer?

Watford have based their valuation of Sarr on Watkins and Benrahma, Their justification to the valuation is the fact Sarr has Premiership experience, I do wonder if the boot was on the other foot and it was us that got relegated and they were interested in Zaha or any of our players how much would they have valued
them. The problem Watford have now is they have to be in the running for promotion, if they do not instantly get back into the Premiership at the first attempt them Sarr value is going to drop greatly.

It will depend on how well he does. if his goal and assist tallies are impressive he could still command over £30m (which Watkins has and Benrahma will have if the add-ons are triggered). Also he has the added advantage that he has shown what he can do in the PL, albeit not for long enough yet to make the big teams really sit up.

I'm on to focusing now on the Brighton match now. Am reasonably optimistic
