Let them be.

When you see a statue pulled down you generally feel it is a revision of history. Be it Stalin, Saddam, or Thatcher.

We agree as in a democracy no one should be pulling down anything.

What I do recognise is that times change as the generations and demographics change and so if the local people don't want or do want the statue that should be respected. Nothing wrong with moving it if that is what is decided.

But this was antifa, the local people have grown up with that there. Idiotic hot-heads, who think they are on a mission when all they are doing is creating more fights for others later on.

Far right numbers had been going down in the US for decades and it's only been since the moronic nature of 'identity' politics from progressives reared its head that you have seen a counter white 'identity' politics in opposition to it..... with the far right taking stage.

The whole lot of them are morons.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in stating that I meant a British context for Cromwell, a statue of Cromwell would still hold that symbolic power of oppression if it was in Ireland. I do state this in the part of my post you deleted, I did not really want to expand on my point about Parliamentarians and Monarchist because I didn't really want to divert from the subject of the thread.

Do you have to be Irish or a monarchist then to take exception to a statue of Cromwell?

I don't intend to divert from the thread either. I just wanted to answer that particular point.

The reality is that all statues will have supporters and detractors. It should be about the local opinion around it.

I understand your point, but statues and monuments do nothing except sit there getting green. It's people that are the problem. All the time we have Nazis, anti Nazis, identity politics, Black Power etc, we have a problem.
Knowing humans, we will always have a problem.

Fair enough but the 'statues don't lynch people racist do' arguement is a bit of a cop out. Staues are erected for a reason they are not de-contexulised peice of art.

They are statues of historical figures who defended the southern way of life which at that time included the legal slavery.
I undrstand that some so called neo Nazis might see them as a symbol of white power but many others probably don't.
Either way, I find the preoccupation with statues by all sides totally knuckleheaded. Removing them is pandering to dumbassery as is celebrating them as a symbol of white confederate resistance. The South lost and it ain't coming back.
Beyond that, I see no difference between having a statue of a Confederate hero to one of Oliver Cromwell, William Wallace or Sean Russell.

I don't think you read what Wordup posted.

These statues were not put up by the Confederate forces. They were put up as anti-abolition, anti equal rights symbols much more recently. They are disgraceful in their intent. They ARE a symbol of white supremacy, that is why they were erected.

It worries me to see these historical statues, which are part of America's short history being torn down because certain people think they depict racism, and apart from the KKK nobody blinks an eye, can you imagine if statues of Martin Luther-King or Nelson Mandela were torn down, there would be murders in the streets..

I'm going to apologise for this but all you've done all you've done is reveal what an ignorant, stupid c*** you are.

Go research what these people stood for. Go research who and when and why these statuses were erected (big f***ing clue, dickhead, it wasn't in their honour) and then go and f***ing kill your ignorant, stupid c*** of a self.

Next they will be banning the singing of 'American Trilogy'.

Then it will be looking to ban books with opinions they don't like.

Then, mandatory 're-educational' programmes for opinions.....not to stop people hitting other people...but opinions.

The pyramids were built by slaves...no doubt many of them died in horrible enforced conditions.....shall they be pulled down?....well blown up because that's the only way that could be done.

Shall we tear down everything built a hundred years ago by people with views you didn't like.....at least we will be creating jobs in the construction industry.

Shall we ban Michael Jackson's music because you know....he had to pay off those boy's families.

Careful you don't laugh at a Crosby joke....we will need to re-educate you.

I really appreciate it, mate, but I will happily take a card for standing up against such stupid, ignorant racist scumbags.

If anyone of them think they can in some way justify what happened in Charlottesville as simply an abuse of history and culture then they can DM me and I will happily meet to discuss it face to f***ing face
.

You should apologise for your language. That's the least you should do.

Really? So you're more offended by language, than offensive and overtly racist views? What a sad, deluded c*** you are.
