And he's behind a £75 mil with £25 mil addons in an international team ranked up there with the best, even though they flunk tournaments because they suffer the similar individual star problem Holland have with them all leaving Belgium early for Chelsea, City etc. You write as if he were some kind of special player. A one-off. He's not. Couldn't make it at Liverpool and has played reasonably well but not outstanding for us. I think £40-45mill would be fantastic on paper if we were to sell. But, then again, i have very little confidence in others having a dossier on potential replacements, unknown or otherwise, to fill the gap. Mark Bright was better.

Other clubs like West Ham have the funds to bring in a top striker, for a club like ours it isn't as easy to say sell Benteke and replace him for like. The lack business from us so far suggests it difficult to bring players in. Edited by Dan89 (12 Jul 2017 11.45am)

Don't understand how you don't get this. Quite simple really. Edited by Brentmiester_General (12 Jul 2017 12.00pm)

Possibly my favourite Palace forward of all time, but that was then and this is now. Techy is a proven goal scorer, he is the best we've got by a mile, and to replace him would cost just as much as we'd get for him, but would be unproved in our setup. Techy stays. End of.

If any selling club saw we had a list of forwards that included Connor Wickham and NO ONE else then can you imagine anyone selling a striker to us at a reasonable price? No, they'll pull our trousers down and rinse us for every penny. We'd end up with a £40m carthorse purely because the sun was rapidly rising on the new season. It'd be a big gamble to sell Benteke at any price unless we were certain of a reasonably priced replacement that wasn't being sold for an inflated value purely because of our vulnerable position.

It's not gonna happen. Benteke isn't a World Class striker and not good enough for a team that will be challenging for the title.

CB couldn't make it at Liverpool because the manager who signed him, Brendan Rogers, was sacked. Klopp came in during the Autumn and didn't play a system to get goals and the most out of CB, which was probably the best for LFC long term, although it damaged their effort that 15/16 season. Klopp didn't get the ball to CB early, with possession in the oppo half, LFC centre halves on the halfway line and ample space in front of Benteke for Liverpool to get the ball to him. Instead they tried to work and pass the ball through full backs and centre backs about 6 times, ignoring Benteke's calls every time. (Carragher went nuts over this on Sky after matches) Something to think about with 'total football' or whatever the actual goal is. I don't claim he's a superstar, but did you notice those bullet headers he scored that were hardly there on a plate? At Sunderland and Everton for example? As others have said, you only need to look at other clubs' struggles to get high scoring forwards in, yet you would sell, for a price that looks good on paper, yet have little confidence in us having a replacement? What good is money on paper? Doesn't keep us in the league. Signing a couple of unknowns who can't cut it in England is very likely. Signing 'known' foreign players can fail. Ask Leicester, Spurs, West Ham (Zaza was a loan). Benteke will be in his 2nd season. He may get better. He scored 1 in 2 with Palace and Villa, and he didn't even have a proper number 10 with us. Plus he had a shyte manager for 4 months with very little knowledge compared to SA and FDB. If you want unknowns or cheapy cheap foreign players then it's probably best to bring them in and get them settled and then sell your guaranteed performer rather than trade the money instead of the abilities. Buying anyone proven in England with 1 in 2 will not only cost a fortune but they won't come here. Where do the rest of the goals come from? I don't see an of our players chipping in with 5/7 league goals. Barely assist that many times.
