From a personal perspective - We have provable roots to 1905 which is great, if the roots dating back to 1861 are a bit tenuous then leave things on the record as they are until anything more definitive comes to light (if it ever does) quite honestly it doesn't change anything for me, except perhaps you could say that it makes a nice story.

I've always had my doubts about TSV 1860 Munich; popular as a Subbuteo team when I was a kid, given that they won the German league title in 1966.

Turns out the football section formed in 1899 and they played their first competitive match 3 years later. Pah! So possibly not even as old as us....or not!!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

the Dinosaurs at the Lake are smiling. And this Eagle is crying tears of joy.....

many websites & record books will be amended. The oldest club in the second link is Stoke 1863. The link mentions that they had been liquidated and re-started along the way....and if they can do it, so can Palace.

the Seaweed are furious that they only got our 'hand me downs', our cast-offs. Founded in 1901, the kids often inherit old clothes from their seniors.

Crystal Palace were playing in FA cups & lending players to England when Brighton were having a kickabout on the shingle of the beach, using Lobster-pots for goalposts.

The club is taking back all the 1905 merchandise from last season I presume.

So many clubs have changed names, gone bust and reformed or moved over the years but they have all kept their history.

Should arsenal be 1913 as that is when they moved from Woolwich to North London and changed their name from Woolwich Arsenal to Arsenal. So can they really claim 1886 as their formation year?

All these went bust and reformed some in lower leagues. Glasgow rangers, Wimbledon, Aldershot, Wrexham, Chester, Ourselves! Should their history be wiped out because of that?

the logic of some people on here suggests they are Clowns. Its as if there were two big glass buildings at Upper Norwood....and one building formed the first football team and the other formed the other.

Watford is another club with a discontinuity in its record keeping. who cares.

we are Palace, we are ancient.

I don't agree. My family had a business that ran roughly between 1930 and 1995. It was taken over (amicably) in 1995 by another organisation and continued to operate, but as part of the buying organisation under its name as happens with these things.

If I, this year, go back to my roots and start a business in the same field as my family's old business (which I suppose I could do) and give it the same name as the original family business (which I could also do) would it be reasonable for me to say "founded 1930"?

Well, according to the Palace version of history, there's a clear link between my grandad, uncles, and me (obviously) and we're in the same trade even though there was a disruption in operations in 1995 so there's a consistent pedigree (if you like) running from the first company to the one I've just founded and making that claim would be fine.

But in my view, badging my new company as "founded, 1930" would be total bollocks; at best marketing spin. That's the way I see it.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

whenever you doubt the authenticity of paternity paperwork, or such paperwork is absent.....you do a DNA test.

a question to all you Eagles. Does the club from our 'hood , with our name, and our big Glass Building sound like its Family ?

othewise the 1905 newcomers would have called us ''Upper Norwood FC'' or Sydenham Rovers or South London United ?

there is a very good reason they called us Crystal Palace
