Interesting. It wouldn't surprise me at all and shows what he's been up against, now and all along. I don't tend to believe any of the claims that have been levelled against him all along, he's just got on the wrong side of powerful people. They went to similar lengths with Snowden, forcing down the Bolivian president's plane believing he was onboard. Edited by BlueJay (01 Oct 2021 5.17pm) I've been all over the place on where I stand on the Assange question. However, I agree that he's a victim of power structures that seek to hide and assert power without censor....which apparently makes you a tin foil hat wearer. I think Assange pretty much proved the opposite. Trump should have released him from US prosecution.

To me it’s a huge case of two wrongs making something definitely not right.

I agree, the point about Assange endangering operatives might have some weight, though it's probably hard to prove and dangerous to try. However, he also represents a push back against power structures that aren't being regulated and have no interest in being questioned by the citizenry....yet are entirely funded by them and stand accused of much illegal behaviour...drugs, misinformation etc etc. It is complicated but as it's gone on I've certainly moved more to his side. Edited by Stirlingsays (01 Oct 2021 5.59pm) The Guardian to their credit had access to the same files as Assange but unlike him they carefully selected what they printed because they were aware that lives were at risk. Assange just said sod it I will put everything out there very irresponsible. He could have made his case about US wrong doing without endangering lives. Personally I just want him gone from this country and I don't care where US or Australia. He's not a nice person as the guy who made a documentary which was supposed to be sympathetic found out.

Since this appeared to go all the way to the top, I assume Trump did the usual, of heaping praise upon someone when he thinks they're of use to him, then casting them aside when they're not. Not that I'm saying he was 'in on this', I just doubt he cared about it. And you're right, that really they were out to get him (similar to Snowden due to the magnitude of the truth they inconveniently revealed) and it's as much as an intentional lesson to others of the lengths they can and will go to if you intent on revealing how society really operates.

I think that's fair criticism of Trump generally. He's a better showman that an implementator. He's not for the details and only had interest in his buzz issues....that certainly came back to bite him. Again, I can only agree, while there are legitimate criticisms of Assange and perhaps to a lesser extent Snowden I think what's happened to both of them reveals the sheer power and bitterness the 'unseen' agencies possess.

The media have occasional news stories about communist secret police and the stuff they do. The Russian Salisbury poisonings, Chinese dissidents/Hong Kong.

I've little time for the extremes of how Russia and co behave, but as you say it's very easy to solely focus on their misdeeds and gloss over our own. As much as people think our TV news has this political slant or that, realistically above and beyond that they are somewhat scared of our own government, and broadcast the easy somewhat agreed stories over anything that that particularly challenges or highlights anything our government does, whether or not it's a net negative to the people or intrusion into their lives.

Certainly. They are the ultimate warning. A 'mess with Government at the highest level' and you will made to suffer.

DEAD. Or at least, Suicide pending. "Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s extradition to the US has been approved by UK Home Secretary Priti Patel. Mr Assange has 14 days to appeal over the decision, the Home Office said" (BBC website) Just when you thought Patel couldn't be any more of a c-unit, she goes and does it again.

It's always one way too. As soon as we want anyone extradited back here from the States, we typically get the middle finger.
