Sainsbury's, Asda and McDonald's are among those warning stockpiling fresh food is impossible and that the UK is very reliant on the EU for produce. I don't think that I've ever seen McDonalds and fresh food used in the same sentence before

Here's my research Freedom of movement is a specific right for EU passport holders to move around the bloc to take up work in any country. And there are actually limits on it. People can be refused admittance on security grounds. They can also legally be required to leave after three months if they do not have a job or fulfill other conditions such as being able to support themselves financially. To do this, they would have to supply an address on arrival or register with the HO which have chosen not to do.

My understanding is that what Pussay states is true for other EU members who choose to enforce the directive, but that Mrs May as Home Secretary not only decided against, but still does not have a registration system of EU migrants. I don't disagree Steeleye my point was better to stop a problem before it happens rather than have to fix it afterwards. Even if we had a registration process we would still have to have someone tracking down those who would be asked to go home and of course our border controls are so useless we would be chasing someone who had already left we just didn't know it. But I take your point the government could and should have done more.

The warning comes in a letter from the British Retail Consortium and is signed by several of the major food retailers. Of course, as any brexiteer will tell you, this is nonsense and these people don't know their own business.............. And of course, they only have the best interests of the consumers at heart don't they!

Sorry I am confused by your post. We are talking about EU citizens not migrants or refugees or asylum seekers. If they have to be deported they would go back to their home EU country, as previously mentioned UK does not do this currently. Apologies Badger, I was confusing the two.

Believe me, it was no different under a Labour Government. A registration system has always been in place but no-one was forced to use it ( I suspect you and others on here would have been opposed to this)

Sneering condescension. And that, really, is all you've got in your locker. I'll resist the temptation to repay you in your own coin because it'd be just too easy and, frankly, I'm far, far better at it than you are. You can scuttle away and sulk for all I care. "Withdrawing from this thread" indeed. Don't be such a pompous drama queen. Well said. That post sums up the attitude of remainers. Can't bear the result (or was there one?). Anyone who voted to leave are ignorant racists

Of course, as any brexiteer will tell you, this is nonsense and these people don't know their own business.............. Interesting I haven't seen this news item so I will be speculating. The EU will still want to sell us their food, we are one of the major export markets for France. I can only assume that the supermarkets are referring to the food being stuck at the borders in France due to a bureaucratic log jam rather than the Europeans refusing to sell us there stuff and letting it rot in the fields? If that is the issue the chap in charge of the port at Calais has said on several occasions there will be no delay at his end deal or no deal. He is very aware that other European ports are touting for business in the UK so wants to ensure Calais runs smoothly. Now of course I wouldn't put it past some over officious UK customs officer to hold the goods up when they arrive but I heard Peter Lilly yesterday make the same point as the Calais guy, we wave this stuff through. If we do have a no deal I expect we will have a few days of confusion then it will all calm down.
