Now is not the time to publicly analyse how many of the deaths would very likely have happened in a comparable time scale but will need to be done for future modelling. I hope but doubt that when we are through this the political bubble will resist finger pointing and speculative whataboutery. What is encouraging is that once we get the national effort going we are very good at it. Having a new design of ventilation aid that does not require an ICU bed is very significant for example. I didn't just decide to do that myself. It comes from official stats and is just one of many used. It shows how many are dying by scale right now. It's certainly true more will die.....Personally I have the estimate at 30,000. A tragic percent of whom were...to be blunt...on their last legs. Edited by Stirlingsays (31 Mar 2020 11.16am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

‘We have reliable figures from Italy and a work by epidemiologists, which has been published in the renowned science journal ‹Science›, which examined the spread in China. This makes it clear that around 85 percent of all infections have occurred without anyone noticing the infection. 90 percent of the deceased patients are verifiably over 70 years old, 50 percent over 80 years. In Italy, one in ten people diagnosed die, according to the findings of the Science publication, that is statistically one of every 1,000 people infected. Each individual case is tragic, but often – similar to the flu season – it affects people who are at the end of their lives.‘ I expect the same people using this will be the same people saying China lies and has lied. This is sensible.... ‘ T]he best alternative will probably entail letting those at low risk for serious disease continue to work, keep business and manufacturing operating, and “run” society, while at the same time advising higher-risk individuals to protect themselves through physical distancing and ramping up our health-care capacity as aggressively as possible. With this battle plan, we could gradually build up immunity without destroying the financial structure on which our lives are based.’

The potential repercussions of this are far more dangerous than the disease itself. I certainly agree with you that we shouldn't be manufacturing anything of importance in countries like China. It's long proven itself devoid of trust.....However China has been fed by the west for decades now and is very powerful. One of the main flaws with western poorly regulated capitalism is that the market means the biggest whores with the least principles often become the biggest successes. This is what neo liberalism believes in.......However, it's the same short termism that fecks us all over eventually. Edited by Stirlingsays (31 Mar 2020 12.18pm)

"Managing the economic fallout can be done over time and is therefore a problem postponed." That wasn't me, as a "boomer" trying to justify anything! It was a comment on the current political thinking! The working poor and those 'just about managing' are going to have and are already having their lives wrecked....but a reduced bowls season eh. That was simply me trying to see a sliver of personal optimism which in no way seeks to trivialise the impact on others. I fully understand the way some lives may be devastated and will require ongoing support for some time ahead. I know that people like me are comparatively lucky. Mind you at my age I am well into the vulnerable group. You say you run a business....Well, I genuinely hope it's ok. Used to run a business, but am now several years retired. I do though have 3 rental properties which provide a chunk of my retirement income. One tenant has done a runner owing substantial arrears. As he remains the legal tenant I have no right to even enter the property without a Court order and they are now not available. So no rent, no knowledge of it's condition which I anticipate as poor, no possibility of renovation and no opportunity of reletting in the foreseeable future. Another became vacant just before the lockdown but cannot now be relet as agents are barred from viewings and new contracts. The third has just been relet, after 2 weeks of work by me to get it up to standard again. Landlords are being given a mortgage holiday to help when tenants cannot pay their rent but I don't have a mortgage.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

I love this sort of thing. I think this thread and others covers all 50 examples between various posters (myself excluded, of course)

Lecturing others on the fairness of politics whilst you speculate on property and dislike your tenants. I bet you are no stranger to court orders for evictions. They probably know you by your first name at the Court registrar's office.
