Neather stated that his words had been twisted: "The main goal was to allow in more migrant workers at a point when—hard as it is to imagine now—the booming economy was running up against skills shortages. Somehow this has become distorted by excitable Right-wing newspaper columnists into being a "plot" to make Britain multicultural. There was no plot". In other words the Telegraph were doing pretty much the same as the Mail. Winding up the right! That it seems to have succeeded doesn't make it true. Being over 80 why would you actually give a s***. When you are watching your family getting absolutely rinsed from heaven you will admit you were wrong, but then, unless you are warren beatty you will have to cry into your handkerchief.

Only too obviously and very unfortunately the Mail does. 30 years ago a friend of mine, now retired, was a senior sub-editor at another newspaper but moved to the Mail because of the contract he was offered. His own politics are a long way from the Mail's but as a professional journalist he learned their style and did his job. He had to often hold his nose though.

He should have worked for the BBC and formed a team with Martin Bashir.

I am not planning on going anywhere soon and when I do want to feel our world is going to allow those I leave behind to live well. My own family is much more leftwards in outlook than me. Both my daughters despise the Tories and dispair of hard right attitudes. They would laugh at your comment.

Obviously a man of principle. He should have worked for the BBC and formed a team with Martin Bashir. He struggled with his conscience but had a family to support and a talent which enabled him to do it. Working for the Mail didn't stop him from opposing their politics in his private life. I don't think a comparison with Bashir is really appropriate.

Working for a paper he didn't like, adding spin he didn't believe to stories he didn't want to print for readers he didn't trust in support of politics he didn't believe in.

That’s what professional journalists do. He was a sub editor so his job was to rewrite a story into the house style and make it fit the space allocated to it by the editor. Any spinning was done by the journalist and editor. He was headhunted because he was good at his job. A bit like all the players going off to play in Saudi. He was there when Paul Dacre was the editor and had some stories to tell. It makes me laugh to read posters here bleating about the way the “elites” are controlling us when their favourite msm source Is owned by someone like Lord Rothermere. You don’t get much more elite than that. His forefathers opposed votes for women and various other progressive ideas we now take for granted. As well as supporting Oswald Mosley.

But why work somewhere when he disagreed so vehemently with their editorial policy? If he was headhunted by one paper surely he could have got a job on another where he didn't have to hold his nose as much.
