I think Jamie said this earlier in the thread. We can not defend the charge by pointing out the inconsistency in the refereeing throughout the match. Only whether we don't feel Wilf had lost control. With the continued clapping, he clearly had. We can't even show that he had clear provocation. It's why appealing whatever he gets would also result in a larger ban for frivolously appealing the decision. It's a bitter pill to swallow but one that Wilf (And to a lesser extent Luka as captain) will need to learn from.

Wilf should be given an extra game's ban that he can avoid if he watches four hours of fouls on Hazard and how he reacts.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

We need more black referees. I doubt if they would be so permissive of the match-by-mach cllatterings that Wilf has to endure (often from white players).

Hazard doesn't react as often as any foul on him is given , in fact he goes down at just a touch on the back and it's given.

Wilf is assaulted many times and fouls not given , as per the Ward - Prowse incident and many times before.

For as long as I've watched football, provocation has been part of the gamesmanship that goes on because all too often it's successful with the provoker getting away with it and the retaliator getting punished.
Wilf against Southampton was a classic example. Teams goad and provoke Wilf because they know he is very likely to react.
Roy Hodgson made a very good point that Wilf has been sent off three times, the last time seven years ago so he's hardly a serial offender.
That all said, the FA traditionally take a hard stance against showing lack of respect to officials and undermining their authority so I fear that Wilf could be in for an additional ban. However, hopefully when the FA investigate this incident they will take into account the deliberate and targeted provocation that Wilf suffered. If Wilf can show contrition and a commitment to his future conduct then, hopefully, the punishment could be reduced to a warning. Here's hoping!

Excellent post. Wilf was fouled throughout and Marriner did not deal with it. Then Ward-Prick fouled him and wound him one more time and Wilf reacted. A good ref would have seen that in context and calmed Wilf down after the booking. Marriner showed no discretion but followed the letter of the law - which until then he had applied patchily, at best. Really poor reffing, but the FA panel will follow the letter of the law too. It's not prepared to deal with an inconsistent ref like Marriner, but it will take an easy case like Wilf and come down hard on him instead.

I'd like to see Ward-Prowse banned retrospectively for what was a deliberate provocation. Also, his celebration after Wilf's dismissal surely brings the game into disrepute.
There is no doubt that Wilf's reaction after the yellow card was plain dumb but the yellow card was not justified and that should be part of his defense.

The FA need to see this situation as it really was and use some common sense instead of the usual sledgehammer enforcement of their authority and protection of incompetent referees.

Don't hold your breath though.

Give over. They hate him because he openly called them out, not because he's black. Why bring race into it?

If anything the world has gone so insanely sensitive over all issues of virtue that he's more likely not to get a card for fear of this sort of nonsense being propagated.

You are having a laugh.

Any player who claps the ref for a card is getting sent off trust me.
I think Wilf's biggest problem is his body language and a short fuse.
Opposition players know they can wind him up and ref's don't like whiners.
Hopefully, with VAR, a lot of the stuff he has to endure will cut out. That tackle on him outside the box that was given as a corner was unbelievable. That has to stop.

I hope that’s just to plead mitigation and not to deny the charge. Denying the charge doubles the potential ban if found guilty, which I’m sure he will be.

Talksport this morning - Max Rushden saying and Big Sam agreeing - that Barnes got away with one and as it was no different to Wilf's then why did one go and one stay?
Mark Halsey also agreeing.
doesn't make it better but at least proper people are saying that one or the other Ref got it badly wrong!
Also - apparently assessors do not attend anymore - the refs just got told which decisions they got wrong/right - no discussion at all and all done from a TV screen somewhere - bloody stupid!
