Unlike our own government (citing cost) the Russians built lots of large bunkers, especially in Moscow.

More of their elite and higher class would survive it than ours, that's for sure.

I'm not sure that's a good thing.

How so?

Are you referring to the old, no point in carrying on angle?

My sleeping patterns are weird I grant you.

While I take your point I don't subscribe to the 'no point' view. I subscribe to the point of life...which is to strive to survive.

If you are over sixty miles away from the blasts and the air current isn't in your direction you should be alright....then it comes down to how well stocked you are.....I say start prepping just even if it's a hobby.

If you live in a big population centre....cross your fingers that we get out of this and long term look to move....it looks like the fools have put us into cold war 2.....and the modern day perception of nuclear weapons doesn't seem to have the fear that previous generations gave it.

Now's not the time for us to revisit Brexit. This crisis needs full concentration, but after it is over we can anticipate some seismic changes to just about everything. For me, this means nothing will be off the table. Anyone that allows themselves to be fixated on what happened in 2016 and determined to fix it in stone, is being as unrealistic as Putin imagining the world stopped in December 1991.

We'll see.

You are so predictable Wisbech.

If you are going to persist with your pro EU crap, then expect to get challenged.

Stick to the topic.

I suspect the yield of weapons available these days will make survival unlikely, and the planet will be irradiated and probably in a nuclear winter for years after.

Just hope that no one is dumb enough to kick it off.

If you actually read my post, that's exactly what I said! I mentioned something in passing. It was neither pro, or anti EU. It was about OUR future in a changed world. I care about that. Maybe you don't and all you care about is sticking a course set before all this happened and one that could mean we end up on the rocks. You and Captain Edward Smith have a lot in common.

We'll see, but it's never too early to start thinking about these things, even if all our actions are aimed at dealing with the crisis.

Yes, anyone that thinks they can survive a nuclear war is living in cuckoo land. Most survivors will be in places like Africa and Australia. But the nuclear winter would reduce the temperature dramatically and thus vegetation would die off, closely followed by animal life and then the rest of us of starvation or radiation poisoning.

Speaking of radiation, it would fall everywhere as rain. Billions of tons of radioactive dust would be floating around the atmosphere for decades.

Most think of a nuclear weapon as being one war head. Its not. One ICBM can have 10 x 1mg ton guided bombs, 20 mid size or 45 tactical. If just 5 get though out defences we would be decimated.

Most of the winds in Europe head west so putin would f*** his own country as well.

It would be armageddon and given the choice I would prefer to be vaporised in the first attack.

As I said previously, the big issue will be if someone thinks they can eliminate the enemy with a first strike which they wont.

This is very eye opening. You can’t find a copy anywhere in msmedia. Before you give it an eye roll and a tut, this is a production by Oliver stone so it’s no cheap conspiracy spin off

Misleading at best.

Oliver Stone was involved in its production, but the film was made by Igor Lopatonok a well known propagandist for Putin. Its aim is to spread disinformation into the minds of the impressionable, sadly most of whom seem to be on the right.

It's been banned.

I wasn't talking about Brexit! That's history.

I only mentioned it to try to get people to see beyond it and realise that as everything has changed, we must be prepared to too.

The 'fire off everything' scenario is one option. Other lesser options are possible. We don't know what would transpire in terms of exchange.

I recognise the difficulty, personally I'm not one for throwing up my arms and people can do as little or as much as they deem sensible. I'm not here criticising others for their thoughts on it.

Agreed.

I have often wondered about why the fallout shelters are reserved for the politicians (all sides) I mean they failed to stop a nuclear war and have never done a proper job so what good are they for restoring civilization.

Surely a war on that scale is a cataclysmic failure of leadership by all sides as the politicians are no bloody good. Perhaps if they were banned in advance from the shelters they might be motivated to stop the war before it got out of hand.

Bunkers should be reserved for medical staff, engineers, sanitation workers, builders err you know people who can build and do useful stuff.

The thought of Mayor Khan and Boris sitting it out in comfort....

--------------------------------------------------------------

So as the world is irradiated somewhere safe in a nuclear bunker:

Boris: I volunteer to repopulate the world (Thanks for your selfless act)

Starmer / Abbott et al : We need to have a debate about people transitioning this is and our anti slavery policy is our No 1 priority

Boris (again) : Slavery, yeah that might just work in re-building the world I'll get on to it.

Mayor Khan: I am concerned about climate change.

Etc.
