Essentially boomers need to accept that the ideas thay have held sacred all their lives were taken advantage of and used against them and will now be held against their children.

Instead what I typically see is a lot of denial and burying the head in the sand. However, slowly more people are waking up to what becomes more and more difficult to ignore.

The welfare state was never created for foreigners but political parties are made up of careerists seeking power and thus will use whatever means that benefits their careers and ideology to the exclusion of anything else.

Thus, just as Lyndon Johnson decided that minorities would vote Democrat and so backed the civil rights movement (which they lied about to people) for votes so the social liberals dominating our political system will use immigration for votes.....and the Tories use it to please their business donors and as a method of enlarging the tax base (which doesn't work long term due to dependents).

It's a pyramid scheme....a Ponzi....but we live in the generations that don't plant trees for future generations but instead pick off the fruits and then throw down weed killer.

I still maintain that we should go back to the old system of only taxpayers having the right to vote.

Becky - I would agree mostly but then there will always be a group who should probably have the right such as poor pensioners - just a single example and of course many of them pay tax I guess.
In general it is an excellent idea.

I have a lot of sympathy with this view though I'd have it even fewer and make it home owners.

Is it fair....well considering how hard owning a home is now it probably isn't.

However, does it ensure that those voting have a massive stake in the nation's future....Yes.

an excellent idea Becky. Of course, it will never happen. Too much inertia and resistance from all the usual suspects.

in the absence of fairness, productive people can always set up their lives to pay as little tax as possible. Always a good strategy when the Social-Contract is broken.

The poor, and lefties, are always banging on about hating the Wealthy. And yet those wealthy people pay disproportionately most into the system.

And the poor are poor for a reason. Its not a big conspiracy making them poor, so much as an absence of success, talent or work-ethic. Either themselves being losers or their parents being so- often both.

its hard to own a ten million quid house in, say, Knightsbridge, without having got nobbled by a taxman a few times. Ditto for high-flying careers, inheritors, and startup millionaires.

Lefties hate the rich. And mostly its a combination of jealousy, envy, and spite. Personally, when i visit Monaco and see a two-hundred million quid Yacht, i think 'good luck to the owner, even if his girlfriend is fitter than yours' Jealousy is the green eyed monster that mocks the meat it feeds upon. Produces bile, hatred and anger. Best avoided.

Prisoners can't vote.

Mind you, aren't they suffering enough already without having to put up with politicians knocking on their cell-doors canvassing for votes?
