"The managers' thinking". Two matches. WH as incumbent played in one and JS in another. Competition of places only really has a point if you change personnel occasionally. JS has every right to play a league game or two. On Saturday very few would place money on CP getting a point. So why not play JS then? Not exactly a massive gamble......... and who knows. As far as age is concerned Seaman, Shilton and others still played top flight football at JS's age!

With the greatest respect to Speroni he isn't in that class.

He has no "right" to selection whatsoever. If the manager considers him the better choice for a league game he'll be played, but it's worth noting that no recent managers have been minded to do so.

Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing!

I never said he was. I wish he were! But I was only pointing out that age in itself is no a criterion for selection.

Always remembering walking from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse end at half time!

Just speculating that the advancement of years can bring about a degradation in performance, especially reflexes and mobility which are key qualities required by keepers.

Managers at clubs are better placed to form such judgements based on what they witness at the training ground.

A point I made earlier.
I think Speroni has only made 6 first team appearances in the last 3 seasons.

Hodgson picked Schwarzer when he was 37/38 at Fulham.

And for the record I think Speroni is a much better keeper than Hennessy. Hennessy with his attributes on paper should be far superior but it just doesn't seem to work.

A partisan piece written by Palace fan Jim Daly.
"Speroni is still Palace's best keeper?" Unsubstantiated rubbish. Fair enough if that's his opinion but dont pass it off as fact. I remember a similar piece was written in the standard claiming that Mandanda was much better than Hennessey. apparently speaking on behalf of the fans as a whole.

Hodgson signed him !
Think Schwarzer might have been 37 when he signed for Fulham.
Hodgson also signed Pascal Zuberbuhler, I think at the age of 37 and both Schwarzer and Zuberbuhler were at Fulham at the same time.
Maybe there is hope for Speroni at 38 !

I wonder what took people so long???

So we play JS in a cup game in which we play a newly promoted side who like us make wholesale changes from the last league match.

An overweight overpaid second string striker scores for us, we win, we keep a clean sheet and it's like the second coming!

They didn't score last night as firstly they did bot play their best team but equally because we played a decent central defensive pairing.

JS did what was asked of him. WH would have done the same with I suspect the same result.

No.

Peak Speroni was a better keeper than Hennessey is now, for sure. The current Speroni is not the same player.

I think he was always better than Hennessy, but that being on the bench for this long really won't have done his ability any good, its not so much that he's too old, but that his age and lack of regular experience at this level means he's likely a second place to Hennessey now.

That said, he didn't conceded against Huddersfield...
