I am LOVING this story: Woman of the people, Emily Thornberry, who is always banging on about growing up on a council state (she did move to one, aged 7, after her wealthy parents - her father became an assistant UN secretary-general) turns out to be a big fat bourgeois metropolitan snob! Who'd have thunk it!! Edited by Johnny Eagles (21 Nov 2014 10.06am) I am amazed how many times politicians shoot themselves in the foot these days by mouthing off on social media. You would think they would consider the probable reactions before they tweet!

I'm torn between enjoying the established parties being given a pounding from all sides, and being a bit concerned about UKIP. This. The more I hear from UKIP - and I mean what their actual spokespeople say, not what the media reports - the more unsavoury I think they are. Patrick O'Flynn made some statements on 'Any Questions' last week which were at best, stupid populist bullsh*t and, at worst, thinly veiled racial prejudice. However, this is trumped by the fact that the Tory and Labour elites are spitting feathers and panicking and would dearly, dearly love UKIP to disappear. Thornberry resigning after lifting the lid on the metropolitan bourgeous snobs at the heart of all Westminster parties is the icing on the cake. Roll on UKIP.

The Lib Dems only managed 349 votes and lost their deposit once again.

Us Brits are particularly good at voting just to annoy the establishment (John Sargent in Strictly comes to mind) - so its hard to guage whether the UKIP swing is down to voter bloody-mindedness or its a genuine birth of a political party becoming a serious 'player'.
When the time comes, I want die just like my Dad - at peace and asleep. |

The more I hear our left wing friends banging on about how UKIP will fall away come the election the more inclined I am to vote for them. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (21 Nov 2014 11.46am)

Well I for one am absolutely over the moon at last night’s result.

The majority was far less than was expected. I am confident that the Conservatives will win the seat back at the 'General Election'. Certainly NOT the resounding victory which UKIP expected. Edited by Willo (21 Nov 2014 9.11am)
Do you receive an e-mail from Conservative central office telling you what 'line to take'? Line 1 - we don't care about Clacton, it's all about Rochester Line 2 (after it became clear the Tories were going to lose) - the Tory vote held up, it's Labour who really suffered Line 3 (expect this in all the interviews today) - it's a by-election, people are expected to kick the government You LOST mate. And the people at the top of your party, whom you so faithfully follow, couldn't give a fig about you or your principles. Indeed they secretly despise you. You are merely a means to the end of them staying in office. Wake up and smell the coffee. What errant hogwash.
