I think it's unlikely Blair reads any newspapers because he wouldn't have the time. Anyway, the Guardian has been very critical of him recently (especially over Iraq) so he wouldn't find a lot of comfort there either. And remember the Sun (along with other traditionally Tory papers)backed him in the last 2 elections and I don't think you could describe Rupert Murdoch as part of the PC brigade, could you? Excuse me? Is banning foxhunting an idea from the Tories? Is introducing laws that will eventually ban smoking, farting or any kind of breathing? Is the mad rush into integration with Europe? They've modified certain policies from the Tories, sure, but that was the only way they were ever going to get elected again. This is a left of centre government and, I grant you, is practically indistinguishable from the 'redder' elements of the Conservatives, who were rightly booted out in 1997 as they had become stagnated and riddled with corruption and ministers using their position to do favours for their mates. Remove all ideas from your mind that this is a Socialist government or, indeed, even a pale imitation of one. This is a Government that, like the Tories, is abusing its position and forcing through unpopular legislation due to their complacency over their huge (non-representative) majority in the Commons. In fact, Blair has wangled it so he is even less accountable to Parliament - witness the reduction of PM's Question Times from twice to once a week, a huge increase in legislation through Orders in Council etc. etc. The icing on the cake, of course, was to use the Parliament Act in a completely unconstitutional manner to force the abolition of foxhunting through. Whatever you may think of the House of Lords, we have a two-chambered Parliament and Blair has acted as if one of them didn't even exist. Blair probably doesn't have time to read the papers nowadays but his politics and thinking, formed many years ago, are Guardian-esque in nature. And I can't, in all honesty, see the Murdoch press backing him next time.

Quote redacted How dare you!I meddle in affairs?? This from the person who tells people what paper they should/shouldn't read? Who supports George Bush who is the world's chief meddler? As a teacher, my "do-gooding" is about helping people, not forcing my ideas on them. About facilitaing their route to reaching their potential. So yes, I believe that everyone has an equal right to celebrate their culture. I believe that English peope have a right to celebrate St. Georges day etc, but also that black and asian cultures have a chance to support their minority communities with newspapers.

So, you think that doing good towards other people is "meddling in affairs they should keep their dirty hands out of"?

Probably about time I stuck my neck out on this thread. Good point Seth - as I read the Independent, I can claim a certain amount of middle ground. Firstly, Cucking's extended post on the various merits of white and black culture should be attacked. White culture and white systems have dominated this country since the year dot. Teh encouragement and promotion of ethnic minority culture is an important step in continuing integration in a society not yet rid of the evil of racism. There is no need to promote white culutre - it's all around us, everywhere. And anyway, can you objectively identify 'white culture'? Ethnic minority culture is readily identifiable precisely because it is different - there are various influences from different backgrounds that create a fascinating muluticultural mix. What we need to do is to promote the fact that this combination, with all its different expression, is essentially a British culture. Culture is not static, it changes with time and experience, just as it is now. That is why we need the inovolvement of ethnic minority imput - because they are part of our society, and they have yet to become completely immersed and involved as an integral part. Hence the promotion of publications like the Voice - this exists precisely because of the inequality in this country, and when the level of inequality is reduced or eventually destroyed, there will be no need for such publications. Grr. I'm off to word games.

Quote redacted despite what your post suggests, immigrants don't decide to create inner city ghetto areas, they are forced there through a variety of external factors that they mostly have no control over.hmmm, i'm bored... i think i might create a ghetto

I've come to the conclusion that Stu has little idea of what he is talking about and needs to do a lot more research before even thinking about posting on threads like these. You're arguments aren't based on the slightest bit of fact and are mostly propoganda that you have obviously picked up merely from reading the wrong newspaper. In these current times, no source of news information can ever be purely without bias, even the BBC swings with the government, its major funder. And as for calling Rach a "do-gooder" merely for her profession is laughable. None of us would be the people we are today without the people that taught us. Yes, our parents instilled morals and the like into us but ultimately teachers have a huge say in who we are. I pity yours Stu, those darn do-gooders trying to educate you and blatantly failing. Just because someone has a sense of well-being and giving a s*** about someone other than themselves is a do-gooder? Then i'm guilty, and i'm an accountant - world reknowned for screwing everyone and everything out of every penny. Do-gooding rant over. PS - there were no WMD's Stu (FACT) and Bush dragged us into an illegal war (FACT). Ponder that thought for a few minutes

That is just the kind of ignorant attitude I would expect from you Stu, have you even met an asylum seeker? These people have had to flee from war torn countries because of civil war, such as Somalia, DR of Congo and Ivory Coast. The women who come here that have been circumsised, gang raped and mutilated. Do you not have any compassion? asylum seekers do not recieve any state benefits when they come here they recieve vouchers of about £20 per week and are housed by NASS, they are only entitled to benefits once their claims have been successful and they are entitled to the same as every other resisdent of this country as long as they meet the criteria. They are also forced into English lessons and other training by the Jobcentre or their benefits are suspended As for intergration, if you were to live in a country such as Turkey would you expect your girlfriend or wife to start wearing a headress just because it is the religion and culture of that country? The answer is probbaly no.
