That's fine, then, if they are happy with failure. One final, by the way. Singular.

And only in international tournament is everything bar winning a trophy considered failure.

Palace's entire existence has been a failure. We were all just being happy with failure under Glasner.

OK I admit to a wrong choice of word. It should have been under-achievement relative to what ought to be attainable given the quality players available. I'm not going to rehearse this thread and the England Manager thread all over again, but player statistics show that England has a high proportion of the best players in Europe, but they play a style of football that fails to make use of that quality. Your comparison to CPFC is curious. We have perhaps a handful of decent players but they are far from the best in the league. Under one manager the team was cautious and some would say turgid and not particularly successful; under another manager it's exciting and successful. I know which I'd rather watch.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

All Scots here on holmesdale.net: Great game against Switzerland and for me the best so far at the European Championships. At last a team that is turning all strategy on its head and giving the crowd something. Too bad you didn't win, you would have deserved it.

Bit miffed at the expectation you should play attacking free flowing football at international tournaments - bar probably brazil in 1970 what side has ever actually done that?

Brazil in 1982 played samba style football and didnt win anything, the great total dutch football of the 70s didnt win a world cup either.

Brazil in 2002 went in to the world cup on the back of 5 losses and ronaldo was unfit, and again played 2 holding midfielders with a back 5. they of course ended up winning the thing by beating Turkey X2, Costa Rica, China, Belgium, England and Germany - hardly played any of the big boys did they until the final.

And for the most part, when have England never played 'good' football - even euro 96 we played 3-5-2 and won a game on pens after a 0-0 draw.

Howe is standing out a mile.
Wonder if he would become as nervous (developing a twitch) and unsure of himself as Gareth. Managing a country is an unenviable task. Patriotism is becoming far less of a driver in most multi cultural countries like England. Therefore you are managing a bunch of exhausted players who are simply playing more and more games.
The problem with international management is the lack of time spent with players. Nagelsman is a rare find for Germany and in my opinion why they will shape up to dominate the world stage while he is there. On first game showings they are streets ahead.
England is like watching paint dry, we are both boring and frustrating to watch. Im not that fussed if I miss our next games. Compared to the emerging Glasner Palace who are miles ahead in entertainment value.
.

Or, indeed, an Austrian?

We've had an Italian and a Swede so why not?

I suspect our structure has changed since the FA sat in that room about 14 years ago and planned for winning the 2022 WC. And we were only a missed penalty away.

It is a large behemoth where everything is precisely planned and choreographed and where the "head coach" is little more than a presentable mouth piece. Howe maybe, but I would be surprised if Glasner would take a role where his influence is largely cosmetic and peripheral.

This. It's tournament football. A 630 minute match with changes of opponent. You play every team like a final and you will be spent by the first knock-out game.

I predict a 0-0 draw today... and Southgate's face appearing as a turnip.

That was a great Brazilian team, probably my favourite team of any World Cup. But it just goes to show the best and/or the most exciting team to watch doesn’t always(if ever)win a tournament. They were beaten by an Italian side that just about scraped through the first group stage with three draws and who then went on to win the tournament
That game against the Italians is still probably my favourite all time World Cup game. It was so exciting, but that was that Brazilian teams downfall, they didn’t worry about defending too much.

England unchanged which I guess isn't overly surprising - Foden and Trent need to make an impact today.

Expecting another cagey game - main incentive for us is not to lose, and Southgate doesn't need a 2nd invitation to play safe.

Predict a scrappy 1-1 and a load more hysteria

It has draw written all over it but let's hope it's a bit more fluent and attacking today.

Team is unbalanced.

Kane wants to come deep, so Foden needs to make the run in behind.

If Foden moves centrally, he needs a wing back to take up the space out wide. We've only brought Tripper who doesn't want to do it on his right foot.

Therefore Kane is deep, the central midfield is swarmed with players so we're all giving the ball away under pressure, and their back 3 have an easy day.

Given we can't put a left footed left back in because Southgate didn't bring a fit one (face palm), we have two options.

1) Kane stays forward so makes space in the middle.

2) if Kane insists on coming deep, drop TAA to make space in the middle, Foden moves into an advanced central role so him and Bellingham can run beyond, Eze or Gordon play on the left to provide the width and offer another runner in behind.

I’m starting to think it’s laziness and arrogance with this England team, they think they can casually strut through a game.
