There was no intent to foul anyone ,to kick anyone or catch anyone with the studs . It was an attempt to bring the ball under control which he got slightly wrong which made it look a bit clumsy . It was a loose ball that was there to be won .
If you go back to the in game comments most of us thought it was a joke red card

Do you understand the rules? You cant challenge for the ball with studs first off the ground, end of.

I did enjoy that bit where the through ball into the box & JP actually meant to dummy it to Eze this time, unlike the lucky dummy we got in similar circumstances against Brentford.

The lack of intent in our play is so disappointing
.
It was illustrative to compare the approaches of both teams
.
Danjuma hit four dangerous crosses in the first twenty minutes and this pattern continued with McNeil , Harrison and their full backs all knocking the ball across from various angles.
Fortunately they were without Doucoure who has been getting on the end of second balls and knock downs.
Furthermore our defence did reasonably well against the onslaught.

On the other hand Mateta had very little service and had to try and create his own situations battling alone against the robust Tarkowski and Branthwaite.
Our static approach play , lack of forward passes and crosses and lack of attacking intent was on full display.
This is down to coaching and our negative approach to games which seems designed more not to lose than to try to win.
It’s a home game in the 3rd round of the cup, not a relegation 6 pointer.
Play with some ambition and recognise forward passes are allowed and the aim of the game is also to score .

I'm glad I chose not to waste 2 days to go down to London to see that garbage - just the two hours in front of the TV hoping (increasingly against hope) that we might try and play some incisive football.

The only positives for me were:
1. França got a decent number of minutes but even that was spoilt by his team mates forgetting he was on the pitch in the first 25 minutes or so.

2. Mateta continued to show decent form but was let down by a woeful lack of service.

The game showed up what we know without Ayew and Olise we have now attacking options, Franca showed a few bits, so a run in the team will not do him any harm, there is no one better, Eze, although didnt have his best game was the only player who could create a goal, not good, and as i said on the Olise tread, i am getting worried about his injury proneness, i would take the 60m and reinvest in Jack Clarke 30m Morgan Whittaker 20m and Ronnie Edwards 10m

Spot on.
Hodgson doesn't coach forward play. The obsession with defensive shape overrides all other considerations, and it shows.
We are an incredibly dull side, the team reflects the manager and his football philosophy. There's absolutely nothing to get enthused about, only frustration. A new manager can't come soon enough.

Henderson also showed decent form but overall, it was 99 minutes of my life wasted. Who can we sell to raise some cash to buy the players we badly need?

I made the decision to travel up from the south coast to witness this garbage.Total and utter dross and YET AGAIN our supporters have been short-changed at Selhurst Park.

My patience has run thin and I was venting my spleen at the game.
Rest assured,I was exceedingly snappy and cross-tempered but managed to refrain from the coarsening of public discourse.

Maybe we should all wave white handkerchiefs in the air in protest as they do in Spain.

Its my biggest issue with Palace at the min. We look completely devoid of any plan.

As you said Everton clearly had a plan, and to be fair it was the same as the last game at Selhurst. Cross, cross, cross, DCL try and get on the end of it, but if the have the CM's following up. It didnt work, but they had a plan.

I'm really not sure what we set out to do? I think its 'pray' that Eze, JPM, Franca just does something by themselves.

And as you said a few positives, JPM is doing the job we've wanted him to do for years now. Franca whilst sloppy at times and lightweight, looks like he's got bags of potential.

I woke up 5 minutes from time and I can confirm that the inside of my eyelids were far more entertaining.

Ditto, fell asleep soon after the start of the second half as had been out for a meal and a few drinks.Woke up with five minutes of normal time left, this is the first time ever watching a live Palace game which shows how boring it was.Replayed second half to see the penalty decision,if that was a penalty the game has gone to hell in a hand cart !!

I haven't seen the foul that led to the red card, but it's being described as a challenge that was over the ball, studs showing, with a straight leg that could have broken Clyne's leg - yet none of the pundits seem to think Calvert-Lewin should've been sent off.

Am I missing something? Because everything about the way it's been described sounds like a blatant red card.

I'm sure one or two of you might be a bit biased here, but was it the right decision? It sounds pretty cut and dried to me.

By the letter of the law the challenge was over the top studs showing and yes could have broke Clyne's leg. Therefore, VAR (not the ref) gave a red card.

However, anyone who has played the game would see it was a strikers challenge that was not intended to be malicious and whilst did catch Clyne, barely glanced his leg.

If the ref had done his job properly he should have given Calvert-Lewin a yellow card and we could all have gone back to sleep.
