Had to chuckle at the opening paragraph in the Mail's report on last night's match: "Even the military horses who caused panic when bolting through the streets of London yesterday would have turned back if confronted by Jean-Philippe Mateta."

Judge Eddie when he gets 10 games on the spin under an attacking manager, hopefully Glasner. I doubt he will be a Glasner first choice, as he is lazy.

I will willingly accept that I need to eat some humble pie over Mateta. When he first came, what I saw was a gangly player who seemed to lack some strength, despite appearances and seemed to have a very poor first touch. The ball often pinging off him in random directions. We had him on loan and I was disappointed when we then bought him off the back of very average performances. He seems to have blossomed now. Looks stronger, more decisive, more of an all round threat. It may be the years of nurturing that have got him here or is it the recent arrival of Glasner that has unlocked something from him. Either way, well done Jean-Phillipe your hard work has got you here and I really hope this is not just a flash in the pan but a true long term unlocking of your potential. Edited by Mwncisee (25 Apr 2024 11.57am) I still maintain that he was handled badly after Vieira played him consistently after xmas of his first year in charge. He started to look good, then was dropped inexplicably for Edouard the following season.

We tried to get rid of him a couple of months ago for a couple of millions. What is he worth now? Arsenal is quoted 40 mill. for their sub Eddie Nketiah..JPM is at least worth twice that. Eze/JPM/Olise on top, not many teams can beat that. Edited by thai-eagle (25 Apr 2024 6.08am) I would rather have the present incarnation of JPM over Eddie Nketiah any day.

I doubt he will be a Glasner first choice, as he is lazy. He'd start if Mateta were (god forbid) to get injured. And he'd score. His all round play, were he to try to play down the middle or as a target man, would be far inferior to JPM's though. But my fundamental belief about prem strikers is that so many fail because they mostly need two things. Time to adapt and a run in the team. And time is the one luxury no PL team can afford. And it is a catch 22 that few clubs can offer that.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Roy never gave Mateta a proper run in the side.. and the system he played didn’t help him either.. now he is getting the support we are seeing the results..more goals to come for sure ...
