To be fair that was the only mistake I recall him making. He really is a solid keeper and all round I think a slight improvement on Guaita. He's one of our better players tbh and love having him there. Why on earth we paid 20m for back up (whose now injured) ?? We could have got a good midfield creative for that (almost) - should have gone for Ward-Prowse Reideweld (know I've spelt that wrong) is so off the pace and never a PL player. Good see Hughesy getting run of games. But as one poster says 12 points from 8 games is admirable considering state of squad. COYP

However, though JRS was a breath of fresh air and fair play to the lad. He's like a new signing too and with a few games could really help us. Well done JRS you did great for a youngster and hope you go on to great things (with us tho)

Olise-esque. I think Jes has the ability, he just severely lacks confidence which I'd think it extremely harsh to put him down for, he's a young lad breaking into the PL for the first time. My hope is that we do blood him well and with a bit more confidence gained we'll see the finished article at some point. May just be me but the sense I got of him was that he is currently stifled by the necessity and inclination to just 'not f**k up' which is prominent at the top level now (look at the boring Arsenal vs City game yesterday). I perhaps optimistically like to imagine with a loosening of inhibition and risk aversion, we may see the full potential of what he has to offer as a winger and attacking player. Either way, he should have our full support until then. Rak- Sakyi is 2 years older and more experienced than Franca, who is being built up as a wonder kid. People are expecting these youngsters to be prolific straight away, it isn’t going to happen, it takes time a Roy knows exactly how to introduce young players.

I too share that anxiety but rather than anticipating his failure I'm just lightening my expectations for Franca to be some sort of hybrid of Ronaldinho, Kaka and R9. It'll be what it'll be and I'll spare judgment until then. The thought of equating any youngster to a winning lottery ticket is prominent amongst fans and I've always had a problem with this. Very, very few top professionals have burst onto the scene and set it alight immediately. I'm more inclined toward the approach/attitude you've articulated for youngsters Painter, and see us as fans and a club adopt that approach, as opposed to billing them as 'the next x' immediately only to shoot them down if they fall short of this. I recently discovered Johnny Williams is only 30 which shocked me and goes to show that I heard more hype for him, and for longer, than I think even his playing career has now been. He wasn't quite Iniesta and wasn't ever going to be. Let JRS improve until such a point his finished article isn't enough or his progress too slow for us to accommodate it.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

At least players like Campana and Williams went on to have decent enough careers. Williams was a Wales regular. We don't know about Rak-Sakyi or Franca yet. I should look up what happened to that lazy idiot Meyer. I'm thinking Belgian league two or three. Read a piece on Sorloth the other day. A half decent striker now apparently. Funny how these things happen.

My thoughts were the experience of Ayew, Hughes, Guehi and Anderson helped get us the point. We will hopefully in due course be able to bring in Henderson (if selected) Ward, Doucoure, Lerma, Eze, Olise, Schlupp and Franca (if selected) Our bench will then include players like Hughes, Clyne, Richards, Rak Saki as well as Riedwald (who will surely come on for the run out) and we are going to be very competitive. Umm Ward Prowse has proven to be a bit of an inspiration for Wet Spam, I know we used to be frustrated with him because he was always winding Wilf Up but he can still contribute. Originally posted by sprites

I have the opposite feeling to you and have a feeling he is going to shine given time. Some players seem to have this calm assurance about them which I get off Franca, plus if you watch his reels he seems adept at what we are good at which is counter-attacking at speed with strength and skill. Hodgson was also unusually candid (for him) after watching him in training in saying the lad clearly has talent. The fact is we aren't going to know until he gets on the pitch and with our current injury crisis that might be sooner rather than later.

COYP I think that's the Dutch version of the stuff you pour in when your car radiator leaks and which, perhaps appropriately in the context, never works very well.
