I hope it’s as accurate as your ‘Frank Lampard will be the new manager thread’.

Absolute madness for us to be offering him 4 years at that sort of money.

Hope it’s not true.

Why? We couldn't afford a player as good as him.

I think the injuries he got this season have clouded a few minds.

Even if he played only half a season that would be better than having someone half as good in that position.

You don't win games with bang average players. You need match winners.
I have accepted that he could leave, but I will be delighted if he stays as I predicted. He is in the top two of our best ever players.

Obviously just a hunch but I suspect ideally he would have wanted Arsenal.

Could have stayed local, but fighting for a title and cutting his teeth in Europe.

The reported options on the table, aren't perfect. Both offer league title and European experience. And I suspect neither would be able to offer half of what we have offered him.

I accept the possibility that Zaha may sign a new contract with Palace eventually.
However, I do remain curious if that is the case why he has not already signed it as his old contract has already expired.
I also note that there are ongoing stories that his representatives are continuing negotiations with Lazio amongst other clubs.
Perhaps these stories aren’t true or the people purporting to act for him are not authorised to do so.
All very curious and to my simple mind if his intention is to remain at Palace why not sign before the existing contract expired?

The Man United 20% sell on clause is no longer valid as he is a free agent, I'm not sure that makes any difference though. I think the delay is simply that like the guy at the dance he's hoping a better offer comes along.

I think you also forget that he still has a lot to offer & is only 30.

Why do you think Spurs don’t want to sell Kane (not suggesting for one minute Wilf is in the same league but he is just as important to us as Kane is to spurs).

He would be staying for many reasons, just married, bought local club, loves Palace, unfortunately his big move in the UK will not happen as that ship sailed.

Why would he go to Lazio & Fenerbache.

I may be wrong but let’s see.

Agree with all of this Dazza,no way do Spurs want to sell Kane yet some people want him to go elsewhere.

We are pretty cssh strapped by the sound of if and someone like Wilf cannot be replaced in my oppinion, except if we spend loads of cash which we haven't got.

The real spice in all of this is that it’s really not known what’s going on. We are told Palace have made him a good offer, has to be true, but almost certainly not the numbers . Virtually every option that any of us could have dreamed up has been put forward, top six clubs, Saudis, PSG, then to rub our noses in it West Ham. Now all of that doesn’t appear to move, it’s become a matter of well what might fit , let’s try Lazio, they play in Europe.
It could be that it is agreed he will stay, but as it was with Hodgson, it hasn’t leaked, and it’s not signed. Just another option amongst all those put forward.

It depends on how good you think he still is, his injury problems, and maybe a lack of motivation now he has a new challenge, its obvious that no premier team have come in for him, even when now he is a free agent.

I think he is still better than we can afford to buy.

Which is probably the entire crux of the matter.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

They don't really , they are just preparing their minds for the dissapointment . Its the oldest syco babble in the book ,like when you bid for a player you want ,they go elsewhere and you say we didnt want him anyway ,dodged a bullet there he's crud .

But its not a case anymore of wanting Wilf to go elswhere , he's gone
The question now is should we sign a 30 year old winger that wouldn't get a regular game in any side in the top 6-7 teams in the country and pay him £200K a week on a 4 year deal . If his name was not Wilfried Zaha every person on here to a man would say we would be mad to .

But its Wilf .

Nail and head come to mind.

Our problem is one of 'who is going to score his goals if Wilf doesn't return"?

That's a tricky one.
-Eze could improve on his 10 goals of last season, given his renaissance under Hodgson.
-Can Hodgson press the right buttons to get Edouard firing more consistently (just 5 league goals last season)?
-Zaha (with 7) was second top scorer of goals in the league for us last season despite a poor second half of the season.
-and the rest?
-Ayew 4, Schlupp 3, Mateta and Olise 2 each.
-the addition of Lerma might add a few.

If Zaha does re-sign, it may become a case of managing his game time and not expecting him to play every minute of every game.

I'm in the camp that would like us to move on from Wilf BUT I do worry about our goal-scoring if he goes and we don't bring in a forward who can score a reasonable number (say 8-12 a season).

It does strike me as odd that so far as we can tell no big English clubs have come in for him. For all the talk of his waning powers 2022 was one of his most productive years with 14 goals (eighth in the PL for the calendar year). The start of the last season he was looking in great shape (6 goals and 2 assists in first 13 games). He struggled to rediscover that form after the WC but that was partly due to injury. A fully-fit Wilf is still a massive player for us, but I do think if he does sign a new deal then he has to be managed better in terms of giving his body a rest. He often seems willing to play through minor injuries which while commendable is not good for his longer term health and fitness. Although his antics can be annoying the one thing I've never doubted is his commitment on the field. He clearly just wants to play football and win.
