If we were in the position where we needed to preserve our lead or hold out for a point, our supporters would not be averse to any 'Game Management'. I’m somewhat dubious as to the official’s cooperation with us if we were to do so however. I think the general rule of thumb is a team who’ve had a top four finish in the last 5-10 years vs anyone else to get the more favourable treatment. If no such team is involved other parameters can be used such as; home team, referee’s subjective preference, any backhanders etc.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Zaha is still our most important attacking player, created very decent opportunities today that were somewhat wasted, silly to wish him gone. I dont disagree, but he doesnt put enough effort into playing, spends more time arguing with officials and opposing players. He doesnt realise, this is why he never got that move to a bigger club in his prime, if he goes now on a free, he will be a bench player.

Willo, you had to be there to truly appreciate the poor level of refereeing. Zaha was kicked all afternoon and Spurs got away with it most of the time; yet when he wrestled the ball out of Forster’s hands he got booked while FF who was blatantly time wasting got 3ugger all. One rule for the big clubs! Forster did get booked for the incident as well.

Rugby is an excellent example of common sense officiating, (at least at the elite level) open communication on decisions through the ref mic, clock stopped when the ball is out of play & very few contentious decisions ( of course you can always disagree on specific calls but nothing like the situation we face where after every game there are whole pages of managers, pundits, reporters & fans disagreeing with the referee or VAR calls -
Put in a clock watcher in the VAR room & have illuminated displays in the top tier grounds showing the amount of "ball in play" time left in the game instead of burdening the match official with this duty - Make substitutions a specific recognised time add on (for example 30 seconds) to lower the opportunity for it to be used as a time wasting measure, for sure there needs to be some meat put on the bones but you get the drift.

Agree. They do it in rugby too and have done for some time. Rugby Union, from mics on refs to the stopped watch for when the ball is not in play is surely just an example of common sense and intelligent decision making. Football the opposite of this. Granted it may not happen at lower levels for Rugger however the minnows of Crystal Palace spent £30mil+ on the statuesque Benteke a number of years ago now, the money is there for it.

If they followed the path seen at the WC I imagine a lot of the timewasting would stop, but for some reason they didn't want to follow that path. I thought it was a more honest approach, personally, even if it did mean some games had an incredible amount of added time. I hope this doesn't become a pattern against us though, as Wolves basically did the same thing and I wonder if Mason saw that was a weakness for us (ie constant small fouls to disrupt our flow) and so copied them. Arsenal showed last night how to overcome it, but obviously they have better players.

No, nor do I. But there's one thing that could help in a very small way, namely, making goalkeepers take goal kicks on the side of the goal where the ball crossed the line. So many pick the ball up on one side and take a leisurely stroll to the other side. Over a match it might add a couple of minutes of in-play time - not very much, but it could be easily policed, and every little helps.

Watch 10 games and one of them will have been spent waiting for him to take goal kicks. Double it for the other keeper and add in throw-ins as well as over exaggerated injuries and general stoppages. It's quite a thought that reducing the playing time to 60 minutes and ensuring it's played in full would mean more play.
