England v Wales. It might be a big game for the English fans (and maybe, perhaps, the players) but is met with indifference from a lot of the Welsh population. On the political side, a commentator (I think it was Roy Keane) summed it up pretty much last night. Why are fans moaning about beer restrictions (and crusader costumes), when they travelled to Qatar, being completely aware of their way of life and how provocative some actions might be.? And I think the one consolation for Wales is that Wayne won't be eligible to play against England after his red card. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (26 Nov 2022 5.07am) I agree. I agree with you. However I think the FA is backing itself into a difficult corner by (effectively) supporting the wearing of the rainbow armband but reluctantly asking players not to do so. When we return to normal football and players want to wear armbands in support of all sorts of causes, what will the FA do? Probably support the wearing of them as long as kneeling remains alongside self flagellation due to all blokes being misogynistic bstards !

If KSA were awarded the tournament at least you would know where you stood, conservative dress code, no booze, no public displays of affection of any persuasion & acceptance that the Saudi take on anything else will remain pretty much the same as it was before the tournament was awarded-its a lot more clear cut & in many ways that would probably be easier to live with, if you cant accept that then don't travel - Originally posted by taylors lovechild
I guess it's hard for a country to be too passionate about a sport that they're never going to win anything in, or even qualify for the major tournaments in on a regular basis. It's like here in Malta, the locals all follow England or Italy as the national team are terrible. As to Keane, does anyone listen to that bloke? I do agree that players shouldn't be forced to get involved in politics, but having said that if you believe in freedom of speech (which I do) then I also don't think they should be gagged either. Qatar chose to host the tournament which was a political act in itself; it can't have been that naïve to think Westerners might challenge its regime and some of its more abhorrent laws. I see Saudi Arabia are considering bidding for a World Cup in the future, that could be an interesting conversation between Shearer and Linekar.

ALL their warm-up/training tops are white, with the black 3 stripes on the sleeve, BUT, at the end of the sleeve it morphs into rainbow colours. The comms only decided to mention Wales before they lost to Iran.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Personally I would say they should actually make it a requisite that a host country must not have any laws in place that persecute minorities. You want a major sports tournament then change your laws. Whether you agree or disagree with the actions taken by players and countries in response to FIFA and Qatar, I think all but a small section of backwash drinkers agree that making homosexuality illegal is barbaric. Also, I noticed the stadium was half empty yet again by the second half once the Qataris realised they were going to lose. I suppose when your country gives you everything without having to work for it then you feel entitled.

Just doing the devils advocate thing here - Major sporting events introduce guidelines that no country that persecutes anyone can hold major tournaments - the list of eligible countries is formed, everyone else realises that they cannot be considered as host unless they change their ways or form a breakaway group, which of those 2 alternatives do you think would happen? They probably wouldn't change their laws, but I doubt they would form a breakaway group either. I mean, these countries would hardly be that missed. In sporting terms they need tournaments like the World Cup far more than the tournaments need them. I write about the Middle East for work from time to time and they seem desperate to diversify their economies away from their strong oil dependence and sport seems a key part of their strategy to drive tourism and to create a more positive image. I saw the other day a man was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for refusing to leave his home to make way for a Mega City project. Having said that, we'd have our new stand by now if we could take similar steps...maybe we should think more like Newcastle supporters. Who cares about human rights if we can have success on the pitch?!

Their house their rules whether I like them or not. No country is without sin. Russia, Argentina neither great paragons of liberal ideals. And homosexuality was illegal here 50 years ago. Oh we are so advanced!

It must be the most boring football tournament ever, i have watched 2 second half's, does anyone really care what happens, i think i would rather watch I'm a celebrity, which i hate.
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

Several of the matches have been pretty good. Worst match I've seen is England last night. I watch them on Irish TV and there's no virtue signalling. Still idiot pundits and commentators but they're too scared/polite to say anything. We must want some of that money.

You're right, no country is without sin, but if those sins are enshrined in law then we have an issue. How can you promote equality and then give rewards to a country which persecutes people? Also, we're not living in the past. Should countries committing genocide be allowed to hold major tournaments? Or ones that have segregation laws? I mean, those things were very real 50 years ago (and even more recently) so based on your argument why should that be important now. Also, it's one thing saying you don't agree with homosexuality, it's a whole other thing beating and imprisoning people for it. Given people within Qatar can't speak up by law, it is important that others speak up for them. Qatar isn't a democratic country. People in Qatar do not have a voice. While people might be bothered by what they perceive to be virtue signalling those complaints sound pretty daft when you consider how some people suffer for being gay in a country like Qatar.
