Yes, in that they won a test after following-on, but England's win in 1981 was significantly more remarkable. Following on, England were still 92 runs in deficit when their 7th wicket fell. Then Australia, chasing just 130 to win, were coasting at 56-1. As for Stokes kicking himself...as I demonstrated in an earlier post, the chance of losing a test after inviting the follow-on was, based on historical statistics, 1.017%.

The 'soft signal' whereby the umpire signals to the technicians (occasionally in error) whether the batsman is out or not, has at last been recognised as superfluous. In future we go straight to the technology. Bad news for England with Jofra being ruled out with a stress fracture. Ben Foakes extremely hard done by as he has performed creditably, and is clearly a better wicket-keeper than Bairstow, who returns after injury. Its an Ashes summer, looking forward to it, not necessarily with confidence.

Still, looking forward to it. Edited by Stirlingsays (16 May 2023 7.52pm)

I get the feeling the all out attack approach is going to play into the Aussies' hands but it's just a feeling. Ashes always interesting - even when one-sided.

They have the bell at Lords just so that Aggers can say that Broad is bowling from the Bell End.

I'm a Worcestershire supporter so knew of him for a while. I personally think he needs to improve his action - so with me saying that, put money on him being top Ashes wicket taker or something.

If yesterday is anything to go by we are looking at lack of movement with the ball after 20 overs and flattening out pitches. Not ideal for England. Lot of injuries about too - notably the Captain is he ok or not? Spirited show by Ireland. One thing is for sure - A 'Root' 50, he could do them in his sleep.

Yes, he needs to brace his front leg, at the moment he's falling away a bit. Fair play to him though he got up to 90 mph which is quick enough.

Leach out of the Ashes series apparently, lower back stress fracture sounds nasty.
