Mateta showed some class yesterday with a very cool and unselfish assist for Eduouards goal. If that had been Benteke or Ayew they would have gone for glory and messed it up... Not that Benteke ever makes runs like that ! ..... Only just calmed down after that joke of a referees performance GRRRRRR

He's not brilliant, but has improved significantly over the last couple of weeks. The fact that a month or so ago he was going, but is now starting ahead of Benteke (ok low bar I know) is testament to that. Also lets not forget, we were playing against one of the best teams in the world yesterday, and probably the best back 4. At this point in time, given the choice I'd take JP over Benteke.

We know it takes (game) time for players coming from foreign leagues to adjust to the demands of the PL. (Yes we can all identify exceptions like Fernandes at Manure, but they are the exception). Mateta only started getting reasonable game time in the last month and in that short time has shown progress. Yes, he's ungainly and looks awkward but at 24 he's still young enough to improve. His interaction with Edouard in the second half yesterday was encouraging and as has been said, with the support of Olise, Gallagher and Schlupp (his best game of the season imo) they caused Liverpool a lot of problems and on another day might have snatched something from the game for us. It seems that the club may have decided to take full advantage of what are believed to be the loan terms to decide whether or not to trigger the option/obligation to buy. The coming months will be interesting if that is the case. I hope he continues to progress and shows he can do a job for us in the PL. As to the who's the better CF, Benteke or Mateta? Irrelevant in my book. Why? Because we are stuck with Benteke (like it or not) until the summer of 2023 when he will in all probability leave. In other words, he's not the long-term answer to our CF needs. Mateta, on the other hand may be, so even if he isn't yet showing he's the better CF, he may do so in due course. He needs the game time over the coming few months to show whether or not he's worth keeping. Benteke will still be here if at the end of this season the club decide Mateta ISN'T the answer.

I also agree that Palace should give JP more game time to see how he develops. Although he looks a bit clumsy, I've been impressed with some of his close control in training and also in games and he also seems to get himself into dangerous positions more often than Benteke. Also think that given the players we have, that 4-4-2 works better than 4-4-3.

Mateta and Edouard on top, Olise, Eze, Conor, Hughes, and Schlupp/Luka in the middle. And please, please, let Ward enjoy some time on the bench. His passing is killing us....

He's significantly better than Benteke IMO - actually makes runs and moves like a striker. Should have took his chance yesterday when Olise slipped him through but overall I thought he had a good game - he's a handful and looks like he still has scope to improve.

He needed a bit of time... hopefully he’ll get it... combines well with Edouard.... if he’d scored with that overhead kick a couple of weeks ago people would be saying amazing....

Mateta showed again why he is starting now ahead of the likes of Benteke, gets in some good positions works hard and runs well off the ball. Lets convert him to a CB then, then he can head balls to his hearts content, he cant score from them ,so, no OG's to worry about.
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

Really enthused by Mateta, I have to say. Still a bit rough around the edges, but I love his bravery and shot selection. Imagine how we'd all be feeling if his overhead kick and the backheel yesterday had gone in - Neither were very far off, frankly. I've long been fed up of Benteke, and whilst his resurgence of late is encouraging he still cuts a very slow figure in a fast paced game and whilst his link up and holding play at times is much underrated I'd alway go for genuine goal threat from my forwards given a choice.
