I’d say it was a shot at nothing. Nothing to lose by chancing the all arm.

Once you've decided that's the most you'll pay then it doesn't really matter when you bid - it's either enough or its not, though if anything, bidding late makes more sense. If we had bid £25m for him earlier in the window then Watford would have tried to use that as the starting point for an auction. I can see the logic in waiting until the last knockings, hoping to take advantage of the fact that nobody has given them the money they wanted for a player they might actually be desperate to sell to balance the books. Yep. Nail on the head for me. Seemingly the 25m + add ons from us was the highest anyone offered for Sarr. So currently that's his value. It's the same as with Zaha last year we 'valued' him at 80m but in reality it his true value was somewhere around 40/50m as that's all people were prepared to pay for him. He's probably not gone up in value since. So come January we'll see whether Watford were right to reject our offer or whether they'll be praying we come back with the same offer...at which point we'll shave off 5m and start the whole process again

I'd also like to think that the club don't make bids of that size just to placate the element within the fanbase that demands constant retail therapy (something we can all be guilty of on occasion).

Not sure I agree with the logic in waiting until the very death. Yes it prevents them starting a bidding war but it also makes the selling club less likely to sell as they have no time to source a replacement. I mean,if we'd bid literally a day earlier there could have been some wiggle room for the transfer but our repeated determination to wait until the final day makes it so much harder. It's a lesson we are seemingly unwilling to learn and I'm suspicious it's a deliberate tactic to mislead the fans into thinking it's not our fault we're failing to recruit targets when we actually just don't want to spend the money.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

I am not demanding retail therapy but hasn’t Roy said we need another striker? Haven’t we been crying out for a creative midfielder for some time? Not therapy more necessity. Do not want us to get into financial problems but with the lack of the above, sooner or later relegation will loom, then financial problems will be real.

That last paragraph is nail on the head

With respect, I really don't get the logic behind that thinking. The big Spanish clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid have elections to decide who their president is, so their transfer dealings are a bit political - they strategically leak all sorts of details to the press for exactly the reasons you describe. Like most English clubs, ours isn't a democracy. Even if the whole fan base was furious with the owners all the time, its irrelevant. Unless you have tens of millions to buy them out, they stay where they are, even if they don't want to. Ask Newcastle or West Ham fans. I just don't see why the club would bother with the kind of spin and bluff you suspect. Your opinion and mine just aren't important enough for them to bother. Possibly quite rightly.

But we did sign a creative midfielder and a striker. If Bats does well then it is as good as a permanent signing.

Maybe our valuation of players is lower than other clubs or we just have no intention of spending. Being very optimistic perhaps we are keeping money back for a new manager, if we are changing next summer. Being pessimistic we don’t have the money or are unwilling to spend any, if so why not?

I honestly thought we had a good window. Eze and Bats then some competition in the right back slot. Mitchell was a blessing as we saved on having to fork out for a left back. Zaha stayed. Lots of players coming back from injury. I’m more annoyed that we didn’t get rid of the likes of Meyer and Wickham.
