Somebody made a good point about this attack being the retaliatory result of Islamic terror, here's an article about said mosque from 2014.

I'm just putting it out there for background, of course I find the attack completely abhorrent and inexcusable before anyone starts.

Interesting. With religion there is always the potential for some to go off the deep end, since religion itself is a set of rules and interpretations that are detached from the law of land. That said, we're seeing more and more that people can become radicalised in all sorts of ways detached from religion. We're seeing that all too clearly.

In neither case was the shooter Jewish or Muslim, but that's neither here nor there. For what it's worth and for what good it is, it is this kind of selfless act that goes at least some way to dampen the flames that all radicalised types and terrorists of whatever hue or view attempt to stoke. Sometimes there's a fine line between going down the wrong path, and realising that there is still a hell of a lot of decency and humanity out there even in the face of this horror. We always need to keep that thought in mind when someone undertakes acts of terror designed to snuff that fact out.

If ordinary Muslims had been as vocal in their rejection if Islamic State, perhaps that may have dampened the extreme right-wingers.

Not an excuse for murder. But the good Muslims had plenty of opportunity to condemn IS, and their attrocities ..and stayed silent.

You're right, condemnation needs to come from all sides. It does to an extent but nowhere near enough and needs to be the focus. The media don't help. It's not headline material, whereas conflict and horror shows always will be. It warps the day to day and leads individuals and groups to knowing that they can capture the attention of the world and push people to extremes by letting out their rage at innocents. ISIS knew that as does this guy.

As hrolf said, violence begats violence, and I think by the same token acts of kindness and selflessness begat a level of peace and common cause. Not hippy sh!t, just being a decent human being to others helps. These acts help dampen down numerous wild fires and never get credit for anything, because 'not seeing' or avoiding carnage isn't news.

Combine that with a sane immigration policy and intelligence agencies that have a better idea of what's going on in certain mosques, religious schools, extreme right groups and so on.

Online communities too, Islamic, 8chan types. They should infiltrate them if they haven't already. This lot were cheering on the horror in real time and are now editing 'funny videos' and images of the victims. They're no different than those cretins cheering on 9/11. No doubt they watched the first person nature of the killer's 'game' and viewed those slaughtered as 'non playable characters' not worthy of basic consideration. From terrorists like this guy, to radicalised men and dim witted brides swanning off to join ISIS it would appear that brainwashing is getting easier by the day.
