Taken from the High Court judgement :

It was common ground in the arbitration that under his contract of employment the Claimant was due to be paid a bonus of £2 million gross, if he successfully kept Crystal Palace in the Premier League after the 2013/2014 season, which he did, and if he remained in employment on 31 August 2014, which latter condition was in the event not fulfilled.

I think that we all know that whilst Pulis performed a miracle and kept us up he didn't fulfil his contractual obligations to stay with the club until 31st August.

I agree with BD that the court case made us look cheap as whilst Pulis earned his £2m by virtue of keeping us up his actions also increased Parish's share value by many tens of millions

I'm not going to get into the minutiae of the High Court judgement but I disagree with your viewpoint.I will leave it at this.

Personally I think £2m is reasonable compensation for the situation he left us in and that he could have handled that in a way that didn't leave us in the s***. The contract was drafted to protect us from that, he tried to wangle the money despite it and failed, and we could have gone down partly because of what he did. If you can forgive him for that you're a better man that I am, Gunga Din.

Allardyce OTOH gave good notice of leaving and left us good time to find a replacement, which of course we and we alone f***ed up.

Parish has himself admitted to "Muddled thinking" and I am sure he has learnt from that experience.

At that time there was a great deal of positivity about the high-profile De Boer being appointed. Had Hodgson been appointed instead, I should imagine that Parish would have been pilloried for his decision !!!!

You ate quite right there. Thank God it isn't us taking these decisions.

Just a thought. We have been linked with all sorts of players who have signed for other clubs probably because Parish wouldn't pay the fee or wages. How many of them have been a success?

Maybe someone would like to start a thread "we dodged a bullet". I have no facts but I have seen quite a few where I was gutted they did not sign and now I am glad. The striker that Wet Spam poached on transfer day and hasn't set the world alight for one. And yes I know we have one of those as well.

There is precisely such a thread on the BBS :-)

The 'Close' season it is normally called, now just pre-season.

Whatever, to me it is the most important season.

It is also the worst season for us, a look back to last years close season will tell you everything about our relegation struggle, and tbh previous years as well.

Let's hope RH is on it, from his press conference yesterday he is certainly not spreading any false optimism about next season.

He seems to be saying 12 clubs could be relegation candidates, the rich 6 safe as usual and a couple of others.

After this year, good outfits who have invested lots with good players and PL records are just as likely to go down.

West Brom, Stoke and Swansea all have good players stadiums and setup to play PL football. The margins are so slim, a couple of defeats can send you down.

At the minimum we must be primed and ready to go from day 1, that has not been the case really before.

Stoke and Swansea I think have been making profits of £20 mil on transfers. Can’t remember on wba. Mentalists.

Allardyce was supposedly leaving to permanently retire, which wasn't the case, and which no doubt affected our pre-season, yet he doesn't get the same level of opprobrium. Perhaps he'd already got wind of the backing he was likely to get with respect to transfers? If another successful manager walks this summer some serious questions would need to be asked of the board.

Pre-season had nothing to do with Sam

when he was still in charge he even stated he wasn't happy that the club had already setup pre-season plans without him being consulted and it was not ideal the plans in place.

Two quality managers not being allowed to do what they want and getting backing needed resulted in both walking.

Roy is saying a lot of the same stuff that Sam did about not fighting relegation again and club needs to move forward.

Money talks if you have the staff you need the money to bring in the players for them thats how City won the title (we are not expected to spend like them but we do need to spend the squad is too small and really lacking quality outside starting 11)

Good post. At this stage it would be the ultimate folly to lose Roy, sell Wilf, and pretend that it didn't happen. We are in a good space right now - a few signings (outing the crap) and bringing forth the youngsters should see us fine

Totally agree.

I was very interested to hear that Steve Parish voted against bringing the transfer deadline forward. Did he give any idea of his reasoning?

I think that could be really good for us so that we have all players in place before all the August games are played. In the past we have possibly dropped points by having an incomplete squad (and an underwhelming pre season)

Since Parish likes to do all his signings just before the deadline why should it be a problem to bring that process forward? If anything it will give the agents less time to spread rumours that complicate discussions.
