Different times I'm afraid. Comparing apples and pears.

Really, why?

I think there situations are very similar.
Le Tiss was their top paid player, their talisman. He loved the club.
Was never really going to achieve an awful lot with them, could of got paid more elsewhere.
Had offers from bigger clubs, probably from abroad, but decided to stay because he loved/ was loved by the club.

No offence mate but you don't seem to answer the points made to you. Earlier on you ignored my answer and now you are implying that people want him to leave - I've not read every page but I doubt that anyone has said that they want him to leave, and I know I haven't, it's just a fact that with his ability he will need to and deserves to play at a better level than we will likely ever be able to offer, bar doing a Leicester. Wilf is seriously good, if he doesn't play in the champions league it would be a travesty.

If he goes to any of the top 4 I think he’d play some league games, definately the cup games , don’t think he would be in their champions league elevens. Sad but true.

He could have got more but the disparity between the wages for top players now at smaller clubs and top players at bigger clubs is now huge - add to that the image rights, sponsorships etc that he could get at a Man U, Chelsea etc compared to Palace and you have a very real difference that didn't exist in the 90's. Also throw in the glamour of European competition being greater (arguably), the pressure of agents that certainly didn't exist in the 90's like it does now - its definitely changed. The fact that the last player of that level of ability that stuck with the club he loved all his career is a player that retired 15 years or so ago should tell you all you need to know.

If he even stays one more season I'll be amazed, my point was that he has been a fantastic servant to the club, I'm sure he wont throw his rattle out to get a move etc but I do expect him to leave and we as fans should understand that for a player like him.

Not at first your'e right but I think he's good enough to do so eventually as long as he goes to the right one this time. Man U was a combination of him not being ready and Moyes being a stubborn fool that was under pressure that he wasn't good enough to cope with from day one.

Why would a top quality player want to come to us, if we just sell our best players.
These threads about selling our best players are bizarre, it’s like Turkeys looking forward to Christmas.

I agree the papers haven't even started on their rumour mill stories yet but there are some on here that can't seem to wait and seem determined to plot our own downfall .

I do understand what you are saying, but my point was that maybe he is happy to stay and earn 80-100 grand a week at a place he loves, close to his family and where he grew up.
Maybe, just maybe there are some players out there who value the simple, if you call that much money a week simple, things in life.
I don't claim to have any insider knowledge, and am not suggesting you claim that either, only time will tell.
Hopefully some of us might be surprised.

Too many glib comments on here, like, "he should leave", he's too good for us", he should be playing at a higher level" and "he deserves better". Shocking, are you really Palace fans? He is who he is because of being at Palace not despite being here. He loves the club, the club loves him, why should he want to leave. He would not be the same player being a small fish in a big pond as some have alluded to on here. He has a young family and is settled in the area, his parents are also here, he has admitted he is a family man.

I genuinely believe there is more to Wilf than an obsession to move in higher circles. The only scenario wherein he should leave in my opinion is if we get relegated.

The Le Tissier analogy is a good one and nothing has changed in football other than the amount of money on offer and that is certainly not a reason to leave Palace in Wilf's case. He has the opportunity at Palace to become the all time club legend as is Le Tissier to Southampton. For many players that is worth far more than moving to a club where he might not play all the time and is considered as just another player, etc, etc. The arguments have all been put forward on here already.

All this thread does is add fuel to the rubbish spouted by the crap journos who scour these message boards for click bait. Don't be surprised to see articles with, "Palace fans think it is time for Wilf to move on" shortly.

Every response on here should be, keep Wilf at all costs unless of course Barca want to swap him for Messi and then we might consider it

No offence, but you are trying to convince everyone he deserves to leave, which is strange. He is a guaranteed starter in the best league in the world, which wouldn't necessarily be the case at a top 4 club. He didn't seem that bothered about playing on the biggest football stage "The World Cup", when he turned his back on England, because he wasn't being picked at that time. England always get to the finals, Ivory Coast is more hit or miss.

the opportunity of some European football must be enough to turn the head of many players in smaller clubs.

and that is not going to happen today nor tomorrow at Selhurst. I am confident that Zaha is already easily good enough for the Europa League. As for the Champions League ? he will only get there after proving himself at one of the money giants.

i would love it if he stayed with us, but understand it if he left.

The people on here suggesting that Wilf will soon be moving on (when the man himself has not given any indication of wishing to do so) are clearly fans of rival clubs doing a bit of sh1t stirring. If Brighton had a world class, talismanic player I’d be on NSC doing the same thing.

But surely European football for that mighty colossus of a club must be just around the corner, not?
