Yes, I was there Nick and it was the most frightening experience of my life. Most of the contributors to this thread seem to think that the counter demonstration was got up by the lefties (Of which I was and am one)but the fact of the matter was that the greatest number of counter demonstrators were black kids from the area. When one of my friends showed them the rotten fruit she had brought to throw at the NF, they showed their bag which contained rocks and metal. The fact is that the NF were intent on stamping their authority on an area with a lot of black people in the same way that Moseley tried to do in the East End before the war (Battle of Cable Street - look it up). There have been comparisons with IS supporters but we are talking tiny numbers as against the thousands of NF thugs. A better comparison is the events in the USA last weekend. Only Trump and the right wingers on this thread would say that the neo Nazis and their opponents are morally equivalent.

That's the most relevant post IMO and you were there.

There is bias in observation however close up it was.

I don't think anyone would condone the actions of neo-Nazi thugs, but the fact is that they were met by Left wing groups who were equally political and equally blinkered in their outlook. The local immigrant population was a pawn in the game. I don't blame people for defending themselves against a perceived threat but there was more going on than just self defence, of that I'm sure.

Sometimes, the closer you are the less you see.

Most of the people on both sides were actually not from the area. The anti-fascists were orchestrated by the Stalin-worshiping Communist Party of Great Britain. A magistrate, at one of the proceedings following the events, said "I do not understand the attitude of you people. You expect the police to protect you from the people you regard as your enemies - the Fascists - and yet when the police are endeavouring to keep order you do your best to create a disturbance and riot, urging people to attack the police."

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

Not everyone in the Anti-Nazi league were hardcore leftists. There were people from the trade unions, race equality groups, students, feminists and so on, as well as the far left and anarchists.

F**k me I met the singers from the Beautiful South at a Youth against Racism rally.

And they aren't lefties? Blimey. We need to talk about definitions.
All the people you list are political activists or naive hangers on. They weren't there to defend the locals, they were there to make a political statement.

People who were there.

Anti-fascists
Communists
Socialists
Anarchists
British Jews
Irish dockers
Independent Labour Party

The British Union of Fascists (Blackshirts)
The Met Police.

Where was your average non political man? And this was on a Sunday.

Need I say more.

What would have happened if they weren't there.

Ok. Do you think that far right fascist groups should be able to march through towns unchallenged?

Your average non-political man probably wasn't interested in a political rally.

Although I'd argue that Jews and Dockers are pretty average people.
