I think in the majority of cases blaming the referee simply deflects your teams own poor performance. Granted, the referee was not good at all on Saturday, but we lost because of our own performance.

A game we didn't necessarily have to win, but just don't lose. 6 mins in and that has gone pear shaped.

A voice of reason in a maelstrom of ire.

I don't understand this idea that a team that's playing below par for whatever reason is somehow not entitled to fair officiating. Explain please?

I think it's just as important because if the players play badly the last thing we want is them writing it off as a poor ref and blinding themselves aspects of their game that they need to improve. Even if we would still have lost, therefore, knowing that the playing field was level is important.

I simply don't accept the premise of this rhetorical question.

I've edited above to amplify a bit, but basically the standard of officiating we expect should be the same whether we're on fire or in the dumps. Criticising the officials' performance is not the same as blaming them for ours.

We had 2/3rds of the possession, yet almost identical number of fouls called on us as Burnley: 11 vs. 12. How does that happen? Also, only 2 cards issued all game - both against us - Wilf and Big Chris. Wilf's was for dissent after endless non-calls in his favour and Benteke's was for winning a header.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Also I haven't run the stats but there seems to me a close correlation between ref incompetence and Wilf performance. That's something he might be able to work on but why should he have to? He has the right to have his play adjudicated fairly and consistently.

Yes I agree with you on this one.

Nobody is above criticism, managers, players or referees.

Have I been to match at 'Selhurst Park' where I have been frustrated with officials ? - Absolutely.
Have I vocally expressed my frustration at the game ? - Absolutely.
Have I been in that nice room after the game and expressed my frustrations to those present ? Absolutely.

But away from the tension of the game and in the cold-light of day having analysed some of the decisions in my head and looked at TV footage I have often seen why the decisions were given taking account of various factors.

Have you ever expressed your "frustrations" here?

NEVER.

Obviously "Calmed down" in the cold-light of day ! One can see things differently when one looks at the TV footage.

I don't know how you can see Wilf a yard on side and a linesman seven paces out of position going "Oh, umm, yeah" and putting his flag up as the goalkeeper fells him as anything other than an absolute load of disgusting bollocks, but YMMV.

Oh. Or, on another planet:

If there weren't enough proof already that you are a fully-qualified rectiloquent, you've just provided more.
