Looks like the EU is finally realising that the one size fits all model may not be the best place to go. Macron is suggesting an outer group with the UK invited. Of course there is no detail at this stage but if he means a free trade bloc and the UK free to make its own decisions on matters not relating to the EU I am willing to listen. The devil as they say is in the detail. A "two-speed" Europe has been discussed for decades. My daughter wrote her dissertation on it in 1983, and I presented a paper on it to my employer at the time, based on her work. It always looked blindingly obvious to me that this was the way to go. An inner core drawing ever closer, and an outer group economically associated, but at an arms length.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

Don't tell us tell the EU apart from Macron there doesn't seem to be an appetite.

This made me laugh it doesn't mean anything because it is one idiot (Guardian journalist) on social media still... "REJOINER Zoe Williams left Britons infuriated after she claimed she was looked at as an "endangered species" when she travelled to France with her family." I love this response to her moaning that the French people didn't like her from her own Guardian readers. Reader Dr Harry Harmer said: "I was surprised to see Zoe Williams write that, during her holiday in France, she “wanted to wear a badge saying: ‘Don’t look at me – I didn’t vote for this’.” I’m not sure why she felt so apologetic. After all, she was in a country where over 13 million people voted for a fascist candidate in this year’s presidential elections." Whoosh He has a point for all our faults hardly anybody votes for a far right party in this country so why should apologise to the French.

The new EU The German Chancellor wants majority voting on tax and foreign affairs plus closer military co-operation. Doesn't that mean than an individual country would be forced to go along with a policy it didn't agree with? This speech comes several months after Macron called for reform and it seem that the Franco German alliance is in lock step. Their idea of reform of course is an EU superstate. None of this is a surprise it is quite clear what the end game is they just keep nudging it forward little by little. Edited by Badger11 (30 Aug 2022 10.46am)

All the above unless you are Germany or France.
