Various groups are now criticising the government for telling EU migrants that they will have to register within 2 years to ensure their legal immigration status. No doubt these are the same people who complained about Windrush now complaining that the government has started a social media campaign explaining to EU citizens how to register and what is required. Dammed if you do dammed if you don't. In 3 years time expect to see loads of complaint along the lines "nobody told me I had to register" People should helped and encouraged not given ultimatums and slapped with a 65 quid charge Really hate the road this country is going down Backward

People should helped and encouraged not given ultimatums and slapped with a 65 quid charge Really hate the road this country is going down Backward The whole Windrush scandal happened because people who were legally entitled to live here did not have any supporting documentation because the government of the day didn't think that through. This government has at least understood that point and is trying to make it as easy as possible for people to register. If you are going to require EU citizens to have documentation that allows them to reside then you have to have a publicity campaign to explain the process and their rights. I do not understand why some people are complaining about that which is the point of the BBC story. If you wish to have a legal right to stay in the UK then you should pay for that right the same way any other country operates and £65 seems a reasonable cost. If you don't require any documentation then you don't have an immigration policy as you can't prove if an EU citizen someone has a legal right to live and work in the UK. As I said in my previous post the people complaining about this publicity campaign will be the one complaining about the lack of publicity in 3 years time when the deadline has passes. And I will dig this post out then with a big I told you so.

Whilst I am in the mood for making predictions here are 2 more about the EU visa scheme. 1. The visa system goes live the day after Brexit I expect the website will crash in 5 mins due to high volume and the media will then have a field day. 2. Once the registration period is over I have a sneaking feeling that the number of folk registered will be far higher than the government has predicted. This is not because of some scam but simply we have no real idea of how many people actually live in this country. Anyway no evidence to back up either claim just a wild guess.

An interesting little blog from the Spectator that I found myself nodding along to (except the bit about football hooligans)

And there was me expecting to read about Toby Young's difficulties in finding reliable domestic staff. "Not a day passes in which I don’t regret firing Irena. She was my ‘daily’ from 1991 to 2004. I don’t think I could have asked for anyone better qualified. Until she came to work for me she had been a professor of geology at a Russian university, but she lost her job when the Soviet Union collapsed and became an economic migrant." Poor old Toby.

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like. |
