I could name names. Please do. I've been very impressed by Timpsons. A long standing family owned business which seems quite successful and has a genuine social conscience. For example they've a deliberate policy of recruiting staff in prisons that works extremely well for them. They're walking the walk and not just talking the talk. Shows it can still be done if a businesses is owned by people who actually care. Hopefully I won't find Fiona Onasanya behind the counter the next time I need a key cut. A key is a piece of metal until it is matched to a lock. If you don't want to create a longer term problem from every ex offender, they need chances. I am sure Timpson's are deeply aware of how to manage them.

As usual you narrowly miss my point. It is not a sensible policy for some businesses. I have worked for highly cynical businesses. In their opinion paying low, abusing workers, demanding ridiculous hours and eventually having ex employees hating you is simply the name of the game. Their leadership was relatively sociopathic but managed to convince themselves it was just how business should work. The possible trade off between replacing employee turnover and meanwhile having cheap and overworked labour is calculated and a decision made in the interests of the business. Or usually more truthfully the owners of the business. Recently I have been shocked at the prevalence of such thinking. Please do.

You hand it over, they give you a tatty piece of paper as a receipt and a few days later they hand it back in full working order. But it should be said that neither do Timpsons hide the fact that about 10% to 20% of their employees are ex-cons. It guess it depends on whether you have an open mind or you're inclined to write off anyone that's ever been inside as a wrongun. Edited by steve1984 (29 Dec 2018 3.23pm)

Various groups are now criticising the government for telling EU migrants that they will have to register within 2 years to ensure their legal immigration status. No doubt these are the same people who complained about Windrush now complaining that the government has started a social media campaign explaining to EU citizens how to register and what is required. Dammed if you do dammed if you don't. In 3 years time expect to see loads of complaint along the lines "nobody told me I had to register"
